£70 million in ULEZ fines since launch

00:00So, it's now six years that ULEZ has been in operation in the capital. In that time,

00:07we've seen some very significant expansions and of course, a lot of backlash, especially

00:16during the latest expansion in 2023 when the zone was expanded to cover the whole of London.

00:23It has been revealed that over £70 million has been paid in penalty charge notices since

00:30the scheme was introduced for those not paying the charge. This is a fairly astonishing figure

00:38considering that this only covers drivers from the 32 boroughs of London. It's also

00:46not to mention, not including that £12.50 fee that most will pay to avoid getting a

00:52fine. Drivers in the borough of Croydon paid the most, more than any other borough at £4

00:59million, followed by Hillingdon at £3.8 million. It is estimated that around 96% of vehicles

01:06driven in London are now ULEZ compliant. A Transport for London spokesperson said the

01:13ULEZ is not about making money. Any income generated from the ULEZ is being reinvested

01:21back into the public transport network, including improving bus routes in outer London. £5.6

01:30million was paid in penalty charge notices in 2024. That's half the previous year at

01:35just under £12 million and significantly below the 2022 figure when over £22 million

01:42was paid out by drivers.
