Cheshire Constabulary and Fire and Rescue Service urge families to ensure young people ride e-bikes safely, legally, and responsibly.
Transcript
00:00Cheshire Constabulary and Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service have launched a campaign to promote responsible e-bike use amongst young
00:08people.
00:09Authorities say modifications to bikes or use of non-compliant models can make them illegal for public roads, requiring licenses,
00:17insurance and helmets.
00:18Officers may seize on safe bikes and riders could face fines or driving license points.
00:22We've been on the streets of Liverpool to find out how you feel about e-bikes and e-scooters.
00:28You've got to separate the two things first, haven't you?
00:31Like electric bikes, they're very good.
00:33I'm cyclist myself. I don't use an electric bike, but they're very good for people who are not strong enough
00:40to cycle normally.
00:41I've got people who are getting over illnesses and stuff like that. I think they're very good.
00:46They should be banned off the road, banned off the streets.
00:49I haven't come to excuses. I think I just think they're regulating a bit more, you know, just flying around
00:57the city centre.
00:59I think the way they're being ridden and the way they're being administered isn't very good.
01:03I know Bolt took over from Voi not so long ago, but if anything, they seem to be more sort
01:11of dumped in random places ever more than it was before.
01:15Fire services also stress lithium-ion battery safety warning against charging in escape routes, unsupervised charging and tampering.
01:25Families are encouraged to buy from reputable retailers and have professionals conduct repairs.
01:31Both services aim to balance young people's independence with safety.
01:34Messaging emphasises informed choices, awareness of rules and considerate riding.
01:39How many fires have they had in the houses, eh? Gone on fire?
01:45So, and you don't know about it, do you? You're fast asleep.
01:51Er, no, that's another risk as well. Must admit I didn't know about the battery risk with them.
01:56Lighter evenings and warmer weather increase outdoor cycling and scooter activity, making vigilance more important.
02:03Public guidance includes checking legality, helmet use, speed limits and parking.
02:08Authorities highlight potential consequences of illegal riding, including enforcement action and civil liability.
02:15Messaging also addresses fire risk mitigation and emergency procedures.
02:18The initiative is part of a broader seasonal outreach to reduce accidents, support safe enjoyment and maintain public confidence.
02:25It seems to me like the people that use them tend not to travel very far.
02:28I'm sure they could actually walk the distance that they're going on.
02:31I think they would have a status similar, like look at me on one of these.
02:35They don't get the message and they're just thrown in the streets, on sides, curbs.
02:41People fall over them. If it's dark, they wouldn't see them.
02:46Enforcement is intended to educate rather than penalise first-time breaches.
02:50Officials are encouraging a dialogue between guardians and young riders, especially about safe, lawful behaviour when riding e-bikes or
02:58e-scooters.
