Beaches, Barbecues and Yabby races. How QLD celebrated Australia Day in 2025

Queenslanders celebrated Australia day as only we can, with beach days, barbecues, Yabby races and the welcoming of new Queenslanders. There were chances to honour culture and tradition, as well as opportunities to provide a helping hand.

00:00Australia Day in Queensland means a celebration of culture, a blending of the ancient and

00:08the new, the sacred and special with the unique.

00:15It's a day to welcome new citizens like Nick, Essie and Ravimba.

00:19Australia is such a beautiful country.

00:20I don't think there's any country that's better than Australia that I've been to.

00:26It's also a chance to enjoy the best of what this part of the world has to offer.

00:32And to take a plunge for a good cause.

00:35My mother wanted me to come so I came down.

00:37In Townsville, First Nations people gathered on the foreshore to celebrate their survival

00:42as a people and culture, before the Premier helped welcome recent arrivals.

00:52The Gold Coast, unsurprisingly, was all about the beach, a surf, a barbie and maybe a beer

00:58or two.

00:59Oh, it's a celebration, really.

01:02In Ipswich, faces were plunged into pions and champions declared.

01:12In Woolloon, new traditions were being created.

01:15The pub packed for the third annual Yabby auction and race.

01:26Yeah, we're looking for about $60 in a Yabby, but thankfully it's going to a good cause.

01:40Oh it is, it's like me, they get a bit hungry and they follow, they're looking for the milk.

01:45A bit of unusual fun, helping to raise thousands for sick kids and their families.

01:50It's Australia Day, what's better than helping someone you'll probably never meet.
