00:01When the ageing blast furnace went offline in April, the writing on the wall appeared.
00:07We were always hopeful that the blast furnace was always going to be saved.
00:12It made up about 50% of our business.
00:16After the initial shutdown, Mr Bruce let go of five workers.
00:20But with the blast furnace never returning, new problems arose.
00:24We'd planned a new workshop in fact before the blast furnace closed.
00:31That workshop was being manufactured as we speak.
00:34So we're really putting our hope on that blast furnace being saved.
00:39With long-standing local knowledge hard to replace, the state and federal governments are supporting contractors keep their doors open.
00:46An expo was hosted so contractors could meet with big companies that may have opportunities in the future.
00:52Not only do we do construction work, we also do a lot of maintenance work as well.
00:58And we haven't done that maintenance work since 1997.
01:03Like many in Wyella, contractors are waiting on an announcement, due by the year's end, about who will be the
01:09Steelworks' new owner.
01:10That will bring hope and a clearer picture of how long these businesses will be without their vital pipeline of
01:16work.
01:16I think we're rock bottom at the moment, but you know, the only way to go now is up.
01:22And I think a lot of people in Wyella are very positive and hopefully, hopefully we can start climbing that
01:27ladder up to the top again.
01:30Hope for a city despite the uncertainty.
01:32Hope for a city just overig envy.
