00:00The last Monday of January has turned into the busiest chip day of the year.
00:06We sell more chips that day than we do any other day.
00:09My name is Mark Hanley and I'm the owner of the Terrace Chippy and Port Erin Chippy.
00:13We've been involved since the start of when Geoff the Mongoose started doing it.
00:17A lot goes on that you don't see.
00:19We'll be in here at eight in the morning getting all the spuds ready.
00:22We use about a ton of spuds, lots and lots of gravy, everything about triples.
00:27We do triple the amount we'd normally do, maybe even more.
00:29Obviously, days before ordering, make sure we deal with the creamery and they've got
00:33enough cheese.
00:34The first year we did it, we got blown away and had to run around grabbing more cheese
00:38from anywhere because we'd run out of everything.
00:41It's just about being organised and making sure you've got enough stock is the main thing.
00:44It's going to be £5.50 in the takeaway and in the diner, which is a great saving.
00:48It gives everyone a bit of a lift on the last Monday of January.
00:52It's just grown and grown, full team on all day.
00:55Lunch is very busy with big orders and stuff for banks and offices, and then tea times,
01:00more families, and it doesn't stop all day.
01:03Terry's Chippy's open all day, Port Erin Chippy's open all day, and The Islander is open at
01:08tea time.
01:09Unfortunately, we can't do any deliveries because we tried it one year and it's just
01:13too busy.
01:14We had to stop doing them halfway, so there'll be no deliveries on the day.
01:18You'll have to come in and get it if you want it.
01:20We've had fish and chip shops on the Isle of Man since 1981.
01:23Definitely not the first 10 years, you never saw it at all, and then suddenly it started.
01:28I don't think anyone really invented it, it just started developing.
01:32We didn't push it, nobody pushed it, but there was only our shops going through them years,
01:37so it must have developed through our shops.
01:38Well, you could see it develop and it just started getting busier and busier.
01:42We used to grate our own cheese just a bit, but then we had to buy it in grater because
01:45we couldn't keep up, and it's just really grown the last 10, 15 years.
