00:00It was a case that shocked the country.
00:04Ashley Paul Griffith pleaded guilty to more than 300 charges against children.
00:09It was the most horrific of crimes.
00:11It highlighted failures in the system.
00:14More of the same isn't going to cut it and we are taking action.
00:18The Queensland Government has now tasked the state's Family and Child Commission head
00:22to lead an inquiry to identify weaknesses in the system.
00:26No child should ever experience child sexual abuse and it's abhorrent that it continues
00:31to occur in a modern society.
00:33It is essential that when parents drop their kids off at childcare or at school that they
00:38know that they are safe and that is exactly what this review will do.
00:44The terms of reference are wide ranging and include establishing the timeline of Griffith's
00:48conduct, examining the police and blue card system and identifying best practice to protect
00:54children from sexual abuse.
00:57Nothing short of getting to the bottom of the broken system will cut it in the eyes
01:02of Queenslanders.
01:03I hope that when the recommendations come down that the government actually implement
01:07them.
01:08Let's have a look at what the commissioner hands to government and we'll know more.
01:11This is day one of this inquiry.
01:14The review is due to be finished this year.
01:16Luke Twyford says he'll release updates as the inquiry unfolds.
01:21I commit to conducting this review with transparency.
01:24I am a bit concerned that it might need to be a bit longer but I guess it just depends
01:28how well everybody plays in the sandpit.
