A record number of candidates have put their hand up to run in the state election following a rise in minor right-wing parties. While the major parties have welcomed the boost in candidates it could slow the process of counting votes.

00:18and both in an election race with an unprecedented number of hopefuls.
00:23This isn't just a record number of candidates running, it's a record by a significant margin.
00:27There's been 436 nominations across both Houses of Parliament.
00:32At the last poll, nearly 300 people put their hand up.
00:36Vote counting could be prolonged, with as many as 12 candidates running in some lower house seats.
00:42It takes longer to check the preferences on a ballot when there are more boxes on it than when there
00:46are fewer.
00:47The surge in candidate numbers has largely come from the political right.
00:51Parties like One Nation and the Australian Family Party are fielding far more candidates than at previous elections.
00:58But analysts say it's likely that the crowded field will splinter the vote.
