Queensland’s nightlife sector singing out for help

The Queensland government has announced the appointment of a group of experts to revitalise the state's night-life economy.  Led by a Brisbane-music legend, the panel will advise on how to kickstart the industry still reeling from the pandemic.

00:00Live music and a night out is a favourite pastime for many Queenslanders.

00:07But the sector is sounding the alarm, amplifying calls for assistance.

00:13I've been lucky enough to be travelling across the state and talking to the industry

00:16and it's pretty consistent out there what the issues are.

00:19It's just the cost of living and nothing's recovered since COVID.

00:23The biggest thing is that it's really expensive.

00:25Like, because just going out is drinks are really expensive and then entry.

00:31Probably a little bit expensive.

00:33The state government has banded together 16 experts to drum up solutions,

00:38led by former Powderfinger bassist John JC Collins.

00:42Coming into 2032 we have a great opportunity for Queensland,

00:45probably the biggest opportunity in our history.

00:48Also I think it's a great opportunity to get our house in order.

00:50This is a group of the best of the best Queenslanders

00:54who are involved in our nightlife economy from across our live music space,

01:00from across our hospitality sector.

01:02Part of its focus will be ensuring Brisbane is ready to take the world stage

01:07during the 2032 Brisbane Olympic and Paralympic Games.

01:11There are parts of our state where after 8 or 9 o'clock at night

01:16there's a tumbleweed that'll drift through the middle of a town or even a major city.

01:20And we want to change that.

01:22Hopefully with the Olympics, like, the city just gets, I don't know,

01:25easier to travel around and more stuff to do.

01:28The state government says all options are on the table to assist the ailing industry.

01:34That includes reviewing things like lockout laws, liquor licensing

01:38and sound regulations for live music venues.
