Thank you. David, not perhaps the return that you were hoping for, however, how did you
00:17
rate the performance of your players tonight?
00:20
I didn't think we played that well, but I've got to say, if you look at it, I don't think
00:23
it was very little in the game. Obviously, they took a good chance, they had a couple
00:28
of chances in the first half, we maybe had one, but I think in the second half we had
00:35
a couple of bigger chances. They didn't really offer an awful lot in the second half, us
00:39
and Villa, and I thought we were right in the game, but ultimately we couldn't quite
00:47
score that goal which was required.
00:49
Is that the biggest challenge, the second spell, getting your team, finding a way to
00:54
score?
00:55
I think all you boys in here and everybody who writes about it and people who watch will
00:59
know probably more than me. I've had a day and a bit maybe with the players if I'm lucky,
01:06
but obviously I could see signs today which were lacking. People to score were lacking,
01:14
sometimes a little bit of the players to create the chances. We probably had two or three
01:19
good chances tonight, or half chances if you want to call it that. Certainly, I thought
01:24
Jesper had a great chance to score a wee head and I thought Dom had a chance at the end
01:28
as well. We need to create even more than that, but what you do need, and when the games
01:36
are really tight and there's very little between the teams on the right, you might need to
01:40
take your moment, and we didn't quite take our moment tonight.
01:44
Hi David, that Dom chance at the end, you need those to go in, don't you, in the position
01:53
you're in?
01:53
Yes, you do. When you're in a position you want, that goal goes in. I think if we'd come
01:59
in here and said it was one each, I don't think many people would have said it wasn't
02:03
far off the mark. It's just that clinical action, that clinical moment maybe to get
02:11
us a goal. Ultimately, it's not just this one game tonight, there's been other games
02:17
which have certainly been the case, so I think it's there for everybody to see. It's not
02:21
something that I've just come in and said, we're not quite good enough at finishing.
02:27
By the way, I can't magician all that to change, I just can't do it.
02:33
Now that you've got a chance to see the side in action, what's the size of the job you've
02:38
walked into here?
02:39
By the way, it's a huge challenge at the moment, I can see that. I think the one thing, and
02:45
I can see Sean's brought in a great group of players with their attitude and their commitment,
02:51
great, great boys. We're desperately needing to add some quality in certain areas, mainly
02:58
to create and craft goals. It looks like at times you don't know if they'll finish as
03:03
well. We're needing to get those levels up, but again, you'll be writing about the club
03:10
much more than me over the years and know the situation the club's been in and it's
03:13
not probably been able to go to the level of a player in the market, which might be
03:19
what I'm saying, that might make the difference.
03:23
You've not scored in nine of the last 11 league games, how are you going to fix it?
03:27
What's the plan?
03:29
Well, I've been here one, and I've been here one just over a day, a couple of days,
03:35
so as I said, I can't turn that around and make a huge difference in the title. We said
03:44
we'd talk to them and we encouraged them, we'd worked on trying to get more in the
03:49
box and get people in the box more often and get more shots, more crosses if we could.
03:55
I thought we had a couple of crosses, Dukes had a chance of a cross from me in the first
04:00
half, but obviously we need to double those numbers, we need to double the shots, double
04:08
the crosses, double the actions in and around the box than what we're getting at the moment.
04:14
David, you touched on it there about signings, did that, what you watched tonight,
04:18
sharpen into the focus, the need to bring in players before the end of the window?
04:23
I'm sure it's probably what Dicey has been talking about as well and this time as well.
04:28
We do need to bring in, I think we need to try and add to the squad if we can,
04:34
but we've just got to be careful that we don't go too much really,
04:39
but we'll try and see what we can do indefinitely.
04:41
Chris, David, it was a tough night for you at least, you could see the support that the
04:48
players were getting from the crowd, how big is that going to be going forward for you?
04:52
Well, I thought the crowd were great and I've got to say I was really thankful for
04:57
my reception, but I'm sort of keeping my head down because I don't want to be at a team near
05:06
the bottom of the league and I've lost tonight, so I'm not having great times with Everton
05:11
supporters over the years and I hope to have more great times with them again.
05:14
But at the moment, I've got to find a way of getting the team a result and I've only been
05:20
here a couple of days and I'm nearly burnt out looking at how we can score more goals,
05:25
how we're going to get players who can do that. With the squad we have,
05:33
you know, everybody's just got to say, well, how are you going to find that? If we get something
05:37
different, that's not, but we have to keep finding ways with the squad we've got at the moment to
05:42
make goals, score goals and improve our attacking play.
05:47
Hi David, you said the other day how you needed the players to show they were up for the fight,
05:53
with you coming in, have you seen enough tonight and in the last few days
05:56
of training that they are up for what's going to be a big fight?
06:00
I definitely have. I think they've been great in training. I think they've been really good in
06:05
the couple of days. In fact, we've been really surprised how good they've been.
06:11
But I think they are a really good group of lads and they're trying not to play well.
06:21
Maybe they're just needing somebody to give them a lift or a little bit of quality which
06:25
might make the difference and they're just lacking a little bit of that at the moment.
06:32
I was just wondering if there was an update on Browser following the test the other day?
06:39
Well, we think he's going to be out for somewhere between 10 and 12 weeks, we think.
06:45
So it would probably mean that there's a possibility and it's not done yet. I'm just saying I'm using
07:00
the word possibility, they would have to go back to Chelsea because we can't get loans in as well,
07:12
we're full, our loans are full as well.
07:19
You were always very good in terms of moments like this, in terms of getting
07:24
the group together, in terms of taking them away or doing things to engender a spirit between them
07:32
to find ways of getting results. Is that something you might think about doing next
07:36
week just to get to know the players a bit better? I might do something, I hadn't thought about it
07:39
yet really in that way. I was looking at it and thinking that at least I've got a week to get,
07:45
because obviously we've come in and we've got Aston Villa on Wednesday night, now we've got
07:48
Tottenham, we're nearly hardly able to breathe really with what's going on and trying to find
07:54
out how the players work. Even coming back here, as I said in the press conference the other day,
08:01
it's a different Everton than I left and how things work and actually probably a different
08:07
David Moyes as well in some ways. So really just getting in, but what happens is we're right in it
08:15
and we're right in the mid and we need to win the games and we need to get the points. I have to
08:20
find a way of getting something which is going to get us a result. I think if we had scored tonight
08:28
it would have been one each, I don't know if we would have said too much, but they had the better
08:33
of it. They're a really good side as you know, they've been spending probably over ÂŁ100 million
08:38
a year I think for the last five or six years at Aston Villa. They've spent it brilliantly well,
08:42
they're a great manager and I think you can see. So they were the levels we were up against tonight,
08:47
they're a well-drilled team.
08:54
Hi David, I know you spoke about this a bit on Monday, but are you confident with the resources
08:58
you've got for this month that you are going to be able to strengthen the squad in the way
09:02
you need really? Again, yous might know more than me because of the PSR and the financial fair play.
09:11
I do know that we've still got a bit to do, but we'll definitely need to do something. We'll need
09:19
to find ways and try and act in some way if we can. But in the same breath, I don't think
09:29
if it's not going to improve it, we could buy something to make the squad look better and
09:33
yous boys write a few stories for a few days about it. But the truth is,
09:37
if it's not going to be something which makes the team better then there's no point in wasting your
09:41
money. So we have to try and get that option where we think there's somebody who could be
09:46
better than what we've got. David, can I ask you about a player that you brought to the club in
09:51
your last spell in Seamus Coleman? How important is he going to be on and off the pitch for
09:58
the remaining part of the season? Seamus was huge. I've had plenty of conversations with Seamus
10:03
since I've come back. Unfortunately, Seamus had a bit of a calf strain and he got picked up in
10:08
training. I'll have him close to me and he'll be around. Whereas when I brought Seamus here,
10:16
I was telling Seamus all about the club and what was happening and him settling in. He's now the
10:21
one who's doing that to me. He's shown me the way back and what's going on. He's very good in the
10:27
dressing room with the players, as everybody will probably know. I'm sure you're not surprised
10:30
the way it's turned out for him here at Everton? No, I'm not surprised. The best ÂŁ60,000 probably
10:36
spent for a long time, that's for sure.
