Inside David Moyes’ first press conference back at Everton

A look at the ambitions for Moyes.

00:00So, Will, looking at Everton and obviously the appointment of David Moyes, the reappointment,

00:06the return of David Moyes, obviously a bit of a cult hero at the club, that incredible

00:12spell he had as a manager the first time round. In terms of his first press conference, obviously

00:20you were in there, you were inside of that. What do you feel has changed since he's come

00:27in and where is he looking to improve on? Obviously, the main goal, the overriding

00:32goal is to make sure Everton complete that stadium move as a Premier League club.

00:38I think the main thing I took out of it is he is very much looking up. It was a packed

00:45press conference and the faces he recognised from his first spell there and he took that

00:49on board, but he is very much looking forward to the future at Everton. He knows that keeping

00:55Everton in the relegation, avoiding relegation is his main priority, but I got the impression

01:01that he wants to achieve a little bit more than that. Maybe a criticism of Sean Dyches

01:07that that was his sole goal and he was quite content to just avoid relegation, whereas

01:14David Moyes' first spell, Everton were the top team in the Premier League, they were

01:19always pushing for Europe, there was a bit of a glass ceiling, which he said there was

01:24in his first press conference. So, he talks about that, he talks about wanting to get

01:29players in. He says he wants to get elite players in. Now, no-one is talking about killing

01:36Mbappe or anyone of that ilk, but I think he wants players who he knows can improve

01:41Everton markedly. You think of the players that he brought in the first time, Tim Kale,

01:47Michael Arteta, Steven Pienaar, etc. He has a real eye for a player at the time. So, he

01:55is very much looking forward and it just seemed positive. I think everyone came out thinking

02:01this is a new voice, this new optimism and now he needs to deliver. He also said we need

02:09to win games as well. I was surprised that Sean Dyches sacked his book because he said

02:15he didn't expect Everton to be in a relegation battle a couple of weeks ago, but things obviously

02:20moved and that's how he found himself in. He basically said that he expects more from

02:26the players pretty much as well. I think, reading between the lines, when he said he

02:31doesn't expect a relegation battle, I think he thinks the squad is better than what it's

02:35performing at, to be quite frank. He talked about Don Calvert-Lewand, said that they need

02:42him to step up really, that Everton need to give him all they can do, but he's the one

02:47who can make a difference, two goals this season. He was quite forthright on that. So,

02:53all in all, it was a really positive press conference look. I don't think any manager

02:57has ever had a bad first press conference, but I think what supporters heard, they liked.
