00:00Animal welfare group Fauzia Paws has urged the government to take responsibility for
00:07managing the stray animal population in a humane and sustainable way by offering financial
00:12support.
00:14Its president, Siti Fauzia Abdul Jabbar, claimed that animal shelters across Malaysia, including
00:20those in Mangkawi, are struggling financially due to a lack of funding.
00:25She said by allocating funds to support animal shelters, the government will help to ease
00:29the financial burden of providing food, veterinary care, and proper facilities, and ensure that
00:35the stray population is managed more effectively.
00:39Last Tuesday, Langkawi MP Suhaimi Abdullah proposed that one of the smaller islands near
00:44Langkawi be turned into a dedicated shelter for stray dogs to prevent attacks on residents
00:49and tourists.
00:51Suhaimi suggested that the dogs could be properly cared for by NGOs and local authorities on
00:56the designated island.
00:58Meanwhile, the Global Human Rights Federation said the idea was viable if the entire operation
01:04is managed by animal welfare NGOs and shelters.
01:08Its president, S. Shashi Kumar, who had previously criticized the local authorities for their
01:13poor management of the stray population, said the government could allocate funds to support
01:18the efforts of the NGOs and animal shelters to manage operations on the island.
