Transcript
00:00It is being anticipated that over 150 participants, local, regional and international, will attend
00:07the two-day Caribbean Nations Security Conference 2024.
00:11Minister of National Security Fitzgerald Hines says that CANSEC will focus on the safety
00:16and security of the region, and he adds that it fosters communication for further collaboration.
00:22It provides for policy directions, largely with the military, because we have strong
00:27mil-to-mil, as they call it, military-to-military engagements with the United States military
00:33for many, many years, and as you would have heard today, it is on a solid foundation,
00:39it is as good as it can have ever been, it's building.
00:42So CANSEC really creates a forum and an opportunity for thoughts and ideas and sharing and exchanges
00:50and training that flows from it.
00:53The minister says TNT is happy to be the host country this year.
00:57He calls the Caribbean region a zone of peace which has been maintained.
01:01Hines is of the view that CANSEC helps to create reassurance to those looking in that
01:06a state of peace is likely to continue.
01:09Asked if the country will be seeking further assistance from the United States in light
01:13of the problems of gun trafficking and the problems with some of the resources belonging
01:18to the TNT Coast Guard.
01:20We continue to have a challenge with security issues around the world in this hemisphere,
01:28in the area that Southern Command manages, and we in the region have our own issues with
01:36illegal weapons and all of that.
01:38That's a work in progress.
01:39That's why I'm surprised at your question, and you know the work continues, and it must
01:43continue.
01:45Policy-wise, are there any particular policies that we are looking at, you know, at least
01:52what you can share with us?
01:53Yes, the policies again, I'm sure you're familiar with them, our border security, our management
02:01of our borders from an immigration standpoint because you have people with ill will traversing
02:06the world come into your space and create trouble for you.
02:11He says migration and human trafficking are all issues which TNT is continuously attempting
02:16to deal with as he reiterates the importance of CANSEC.
02:20And CANSEC provides, as I say, for the development of processes, for training, ongoing training
02:29for members of the defence force in the specialties that are necessary to deal with the very complex
02:35business of international, regional and even national security.
02:41The minister does not foresee any change in the political regime in the United States
02:46affecting the military-to-military relationship, which he notes has been maintained for decades.
02:52And that is expected to continue.
02:54The military is not like our military involved in political things.
02:59And for that reason, I think it is safe to say that the trajectory that it always ran
03:04on is expected to continue unperturbed.
