What's left of Tropical Storm Sara to bring heavy rain to the Gulf Coast

Tropical Storm Sara lost its official tropical status after slamming Central America, but the system is still moving forward.

00:00After bringing dangerous flooding to Central America, including Honduras,

00:04Sarah has lost a lot of that wind intensity and has been designated a tropical rainstorm

00:10by AccuWeather hurricane experts. Sarah will bring heavy rain to portions of the Gulf Coast

00:14early this week, but before we get to some of those details, we head to Bernie Rayno

00:17and AccuWeather lead hurricane expert Alex Da Silva with an important Atlantic hurricane season update.

00:25Alex, we're getting to the end of November. What a November we've had.

00:30Two hurricanes. I'm sorry, one hurricane and two tropical storms.

00:35Yeah, it's certainly been very impressive. And at the end of October, we told everybody that

00:39we were expecting a pretty busy November. We were forecasting one to three named systems

00:44during the month of November. And lo and behold, here we are. We've seen three named storms. But

00:49I have some good news. I think we're done with the U.S. impacts beyond what happens here with

00:54tropical rainstorms, Sarah. So I think we're kind of bringing it to the end of the 2024 tropical

01:00season. Yeah, take a look at the satellite, Alex. You can see a frontal boundary all the way down

01:06in toward the Lesser Antilles. That means that front has penetrated pretty far south. And that's

01:11one of the reasons you think, well, we're likely to be done with any landfalling systems in the U.S.

01:18Yeah, and when that happens, we get a lot of wind shear. And that's typically why,

01:21especially in the back half of November, we really start to shut down the Atlantic hurricane season.

01:26A lot of wind shear. And you can see on the graph here, we're very, very low, very low to the bottom

01:31here. So I don't expect any more U.S. impacts besides a little bit of rain from Sarah, which

01:36is good news. We could get a rogue storm way out in the middle of the Atlantic. But in terms of U.S.

01:41impacts, I think we're done.

01:48Alex Silva said it. I think we are done. And now we do still have tropical impacts to deal with as

01:56what is left of Sarah, that tropical rainstorm makes its way further north and makes its way

02:00further east. Now, as this storm or what's left of it, it's going to churn up a lot of water and

02:07it's going to move it onto shore. And unfortunately, we're going to start to see some of that big

02:13impact from Sarah when it comes to the flooding here arriving by Tuesday morning, spreading

02:18through the southeast, even through Wednesday. Those arrival times are when the heaviest rain

02:23is going to hit. And you can see here where we have this darker green blob along the central

02:28Gulf Coast. We could see upwards of two to four inches. This could prove to be a dangerous

02:33situation along I-10 or at least around those corridors. And while we could see upwards of 50

02:40inches in your actual local storm XO, an isolated area could get hammered with the heavy rain. So we

02:46are on the lookout here as we do head into Wednesday. We do have that some impact here to

02:54lives and property that risks the lives and property with that heavy rain was

02:58heavy rain risk and also the gusty winds, rough seas, though, and rip currents. Your

03:04real impact scale, though, for the U.S. at a one. But why do we have that some? It's because

03:09of this heavy rain. We mentioned it a little earlier. We're going to see that push of tropical

03:13moisture Monday night through Tuesday night. So about 24 hour time frame. This is when it's going

03:21to get quite yucky here across the central Gulf Coast and even pushing further inland to Montgomery.

03:27But we could really use the rain. In fact, across this area, we have been dry, but we don't want it

03:32to come down so hard and so fast. Your actual local storm XO could see upwards to 12 inches.

03:38And right behind this, we have this high pressure settling in across East Texas Thursday into Friday.

03:44We're going to be blowing in much cooler air for the southeast. It's going to be the chilliest

03:48air of the season, in fact. So with the rain first coming and then, of course, the chill,

03:53we're running about five to 15 degrees below where we typically sit for this time of year.
