Transcript
00:00According to Massey Gas Products, around 9pm on November 15th, excess nitrogen was vented
00:07during what a company says was a routine mobile tanker filling operation.
00:11The incident resulted in the roadway on the outskirts of the company, located at the Point
00:16Lisa's industrial estate, being filled with a smoke-like chemical discharge.
00:22Massey says there was no harm to people, property or the environment as it gave its commitment
00:27to maintaining the highest safety standard to protect people and the environment.
00:32TV6 News contacted Chief Executive Officer of the Environmental Management Authority,
00:37Hayden Romano, on the incident.
00:39What's the EMA's position at this point?
00:42At this time, the EMA, like the rest of the public, has only just been informed that it
00:52was Massey, the incident last night at Point Lisa's was Massey, as confirmed by Massey
01:00and we will investigate and once we have information based on the investigation, we will get back
01:08to the public and to the media, to the public through the media.
01:13He says such chemicals coming into contact with the public is not something the EMA would
01:19like to see happening.
01:20So, I do not think it could have been the normal procedure.
01:26But any other additional concerns about what you saw in that video?
01:30Well, I think the biggest concern for us is that we would have thought that based on the
01:39incident, I mean, that Massey would have contacted our hotline and at least informed us, which
01:47is, I mean, what we see as standard operating procedure.
01:49I mean, if an incident occurs, you immediately contact us.
01:53He says the EMA hotline is a 24-hour service and when used, puts the EMA in a better position
02:00to be able to respond accurately to the media and or the public.
02:05Nitrogen gas is an asphyxiant and inhalation can be fatal.
02:10Asked whether there are concerns about a chemical coming into contact with people, Romano responds.
02:24Romano expects the EMA's investigation to be completed by Tuesday.
