Jailey Field Play Park launched in Armley

The New Wortley Community Association have proudly launched new play facilities at Oak Road Recreation Ground, also known as the Jailey Field, just beside HMP Prison Leeds in Armley.

00:00Hi everyone, I'm Andrea Edwards, I'm the Chief Executive Officer at New Worley Community

00:05Centre and we are here today on our local green space which is Jayley Field, otherwise

00:10known as Oak Road Rec Ground and we're here for the opening of the play park.

00:14It's been an incredible long journey actually, it's involved lots and lots of different partners

00:19so we've worked very closely with the Safer Stronger Communities team at Leeds City Council

00:23who supported our recent application to Viola Environmental who has had the faith in us

00:30to actually fund this park but really the hard work began a long time ago.

00:35We have a youth board in New Worley that are based at the New Worley Community Centre and

00:39they are really the youth of the children and young people living in this area and throughout

00:43their constant consultation over the past few years the recurring theme has always been

00:48we want a safe inclusive place for our children to play and so they gathered all the evidence

00:53that we needed to put this bid in today and we're just so pleased that the whole community

00:59are just going to come together and hopefully have a wonderful day.

01:01It was more run down and a bit tattered so we wanted to make a change with it and so

01:09I joined the youth club to make a change and I'm really proud and glad that we've made

01:15it safer for people to go and just give the younger part of the community something to do.

01:22We have lots of high-rise accommodation in the local area in New Worley and finding somewhere

01:27to play is so important to those families. It provides a space for families to come together

01:31and interact. We do lots of events on the field around the festival and children's

01:36picnics and things so yeah there's a great legacy here and we hope that the play park

01:41really is a bit of a catalyst for other investment. We'd really like to get the path that goes

01:46around the edge of the park done so that we've got a really good cycle track and walking

01:50track. There's so much really that can be done with this space so this really, the play

01:55park, is a really important step but we feel it's just the first step.
