Here's today's Derbyshire Times video bulletin.
00:03
A Derbyshire family has unveiled a giant 150 kilogram
00:07
homegrown pumpkin as the centerpiece
00:09
of their Halloween display.
00:11
Full-time carer Stephen Turner, his wife Karen,
00:14
and their 11-year-old son Dion have been growing
00:16
the monster squash in their back garden
00:18
in Whitwell for several months.
00:20
Stephen said, it was exceeding anything I expected.
00:23
This year's been very bad for pumpkins
00:25
and a lot of farmers' crops have failed.
00:27
It's been a bit hard to get it on any scales,
00:29
but according to the measurements I've estimated,
00:31
it's about 334 pounds give or take.
00:34
To achieve something over 300 pounds
00:35
is nothing short of a miracle.
00:38
After Halloween, Stephen hopes to share his success
00:40
with anyone else who wants to try
00:41
growing their pumpkin in a string.
00:43
He said, the seeds will be collected
00:45
and I will offer them to allotment holders in schools.
00:48
The flesh will go in the compost heap
00:49
and be used for next year's vegetables.
00:52
The daft thing is, I hate eating pumpkins.
00:54
We've got a house full of pumpkin ornaments.
00:56
I love looking at them and growing them,
00:57
but I don't like eating them.
01:01
A charity golf day organized
01:03
by Derbyshire-based roofing firm, Advance Roofing,
01:06
has proved to be a terrific event,
01:07
raising over 3,500 pounds for Treetops Hospice.
01:11
Suppliers and local businesses swap their day jobs
01:13
for the greens at one of the UK's premier golf destinations,
01:17
the Forest of Arden Golf Club,
01:18
for 18 holes followed by an auction.
01:21
The money raised will help Treetops,
01:22
the hospice for South Derbyshire and the city of Derby,
01:25
to take care of people with life-limiting illnesses
01:28
and their family.
01:29
Lisa Hartshorn, who is financial director
01:31
at Advance Roofing, said,
01:32
it was the first time we organized a corporate roof day
01:35
and I can't believe how successful it was.
01:37
Thanks to the teams who took part
01:38
and the suppliers who donated prizes,
01:40
we've raised an amazing 3,590 pounds for Treetops.
01:45
We're so pleased with how it went
01:46
that we were making it an annual event
01:48
in support of Treetops.
