00:00A fight between two parents of students at the Sidra Secondary School, one armed with
00:11a cutlass, occurred just outside the school gates on Monday, videos of which have been
00:17widely shared on social media. Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of Central South Trinidad
00:23Wayne Meister says the two mothers went to the school to address allegations of bullying
00:28against both of their children, and when they were not satisfied with the intervention
00:33made by the school, they decided to take matters into their own hands by attacking each other.
00:40This type of behaviour displayed by parents is totally unacceptable and will not be tolerated.
00:47As we speak, our investigators from the Sidra Police are already investigating this matter
00:54and charges will be preferred in a very, very short space of time.
01:00We reached out to Education Minister Dr Nayan Gatsby-Dolley, but up to news time did not
01:05receive feedback. Responding to the incident, Tutor President Martin Lumpkin said he was
01:11disgusted by the actions taken by these parents.
01:16We are outraged by the behaviour of some parents who should be setting better examples for
01:24their children and for the nation's youth. Based upon some of the videos being circulated,
01:32we can understand why some of our students behave in the manner in which they do.
01:40Meanwhile, the President of the National Parent Teacher Association called for parenting workshops
01:46to be set up, which can educate parents and guardians on the importance of leading by
01:52example and teaching conflict resolution techniques.
01:56A parenting seminar in order to be able to guide our parents as to proper behaviour,
02:02proper role modelling, proper exemplars of themselves so that their charges can see how
02:09to conduct themselves in any and every situation, how to operate under conflict and when conflict
02:16is imminent and how to be able to mitigate the conflicts that are taking place.
