Eddie Howe drops major Anthony Gordon injury update

Reaction from Eddie Howe's pre-match press conference as major update is given on whether Anthony Gordon will feature for Newcastle United against Chelsea in the Carabao Cup at St James' Park.

00:04ahead of the Carabao Cup game against Chelsea. Pretty much of the same from what he said

00:10after the game at Stamford Bridge on Sunday night. Of course everyone wants to know whether

00:13Anthony Gordon will be fit to face Chelsea in the Cup. He didn't play on Sunday and Eddie

00:18Howe was a bit coy on his availability. He said he had a scan and that they're going

00:22to see how he gets on today in training ahead of the game. But then he did go on to mention

00:28that they have got a big game against Arsenal on Sunday so they have to manage the workload.

00:31So that will be interesting whether Anthony Gordon does play tomorrow. Of course it will

00:34be a big shame if he doesn't. He's one of Newcastle's key players and he was a big miss

00:38at the weekend. So it will be interesting whether he does play. Other than that there's

00:43no other news on the injury front. Gordon was the only one really doubtful. All the

00:46rest are still out. Howe was asked about Lewis Miley. He said the club have got to be really

00:51careful on his minutes. Of course he's come back from not just the injury in pre-season

00:56but the injury he suffered at the end of last year. They're going to be over-coached

01:00with him. Howe did tell me that he felt Newcastle overused him last year and they want to make

01:05sure they don't do that again this year. So whether he gets any minutes against Chelsea

01:09I'm unsure. He'll probably be on the bench and certainly one that would expect to get

01:13minutes as the season comes but maybe too soon for Lewis Miley. In terms of the match

01:17there were lots of questions about Cole Palmer. Of course he was brilliant on Sunday and whether

01:20Newcastle are going to deal with him. But I think Newcastle will have to deal with him.

01:25Chelsea squad are so big that Cole Palmer might not even play and yet they potentially

01:29replace him with a £30, £40, £50 million player even. So Newcastle really need a winner.

01:34Obviously it's a must-win game. Every cup game is a must-win game. Is it a season to

01:38find a moment if they get beat? This week they're out with one competition that they

01:43could win and they've only got one more chance of a trophy in the FA Cup. With Arsenal at

01:48the weekend as well it's two really big games and of course St James' Park is a big factor.

01:53They would have fancied their chances against any one of St James'. Chelsea, their match

01:57for fair bits on Sunday will be disappointing to lose. So whether that can be the extra

02:01factor they need to get the win on Wednesday. And of course they've spotted the Carabao

02:05Cup quarter-final which will be their third Carabao Cup quarter-final in the last three

02:09years. So a huge match tomorrow against Chelsea.
