00:08Netflix's drama series, the Makanai follows two friends who move to Kyoto to become Maiko
00:12entertainers.
00:13Just to let you know this video will contain spoilers.
00:16Kiyo and Samae are two inseparable friends move from their homes in the Omori Prefecture
00:20to Kyoto, with dreams of becoming a Maiko entertainer.
00:24The welcome at the Yakata in Kyoto is warm and the mothers and the sisters there are
00:28all kind and helpful.
00:29Samae, who's a natural talent at performing the Mai, excels in the training, impressing
00:34all.
00:35However, Kiyo struggles to keep up, and the teachers spot it as well.
00:40Her fumbles continue to the point where it's decided that she best leave Kyoto and pursue
00:43something else.
00:44Kiyo and Samae are in heartbroken, but when the Makanai, the one who cooks for the Maiko,
00:49retires due to injury, and as a result, the girls get bored out of their minds eating
00:53the takeouts, Kiyo volunteers to make food.
00:57Kiyo has found her calling, and she takes delight in cooking food for everyone at the
01:02Yakata, and without relenting no less.
01:05It brings her immense joy and slowly this leads to her becoming the official Makanai
01:08of the Maiko house.
01:10Meanwhile, Samae continues to excel and becomes a Maiko, a feat really impressive for her
01:14young age.
01:16In the meantime, they make strong bonds with all the members of the Maiko house as well
01:20as the long-time guests.
01:22Does Samae achieve her dream?
01:24Yes, Samae does achieve her dream of becoming a Maiko, in a relatively short amount of time
01:28as well.
01:30Right off the bat, Samae excels in the My Dance training and her teachers and superiors
01:34take note of it.
01:35While Kiyo fumbles and then changes her course, Samae sticks with her course and glides through
01:40the path of becoming a Maiko.
01:42The decorated top Maiko, a Momoko, takes note of Samae and her hard work and soon begins
01:46mentoring her.
01:48She takes a liking to Samae, something really peculiar for a reserved and strict person
01:52like her.
01:53Samae becomes a Maiko and is renamed.
01:56Her new name is derived from Momoko, combined with Hana as the suffix.
02:01Everyone calls her Mama Hana now, with the only exception being Kiyo, who is allowed
02:05to keep calling her best friend by her original name.
02:08Is Kiyo happy with being the Makanai?
02:11Everyone is a little hesitant to accept at face value, the idea that Kiyo is really satisfied
02:16assuming her role of the Makanai at the Ikata.
02:19Ryoko asks Kiyo a couple of times if she's really happy doing what she does, relentlessly
02:23making and serving everyone delightful dishes without any signs of stress or discontent.
02:28However, Kiyo is only ever a little let down when people don't get to eat the food made
02:32by her before it cools down.
02:34She's delighted otherwise, in feeding everyone hearty dishes and coming up with different
02:38recipes, picking up the groceries, and cooking.
02:41In the last episode of the Makanai, Samae asks her if she has any regrets.
02:46Kiyo is confused as to what she's alluding to when Samae says that it was she who first
02:50talked about becoming a Maiko and whether she got stuck with being a Makanai, when she
02:54might have never wanted any of this.
02:56However, Kiyo reassures her that she's happy, telling her that she feels becoming the Makanai
03:01was her destiny.
03:03Do Mr. Nadebe and Mother Azusa end up together?
03:06Mr. Nadebe and Mother Azusa are deeply in love with each other.
03:10The entirety of the Makanai as sees the two lovebirds spend quality time going on dates.
03:15However, Mr. Nadebe is one scaredy cat in that he's been postponing his proposal for
03:19a long time.
03:20A lot of people have nudged him into mustering up the courage soon or it'll be too late.
03:26However, the season ends with Nadebe ever confessing to Azusa.
03:30That doesn't mean, however, that the two are oblivious to the mutual love they have for
03:34each other.
03:35Mr. Nadebe also confirms his love for Mother Azusa to her daughter Ryoko, reassuring her
03:39that he'll take care of her mother and that his love won't interfere with the life the
03:43mother and daughter share with each other.
