00:00Hi, welcome back to my channel, in this video, I will explain the ending of The Apology,
00:04so let's begin.
00:06Shudders, The Apology is a 2022 thriller film about Darlene, a mother whose daughter disappeared
00:1120 years ago.
00:13When her ex-relative, Jack, her sister's former husband, comes to Darlene's doorstep,
00:18Darlene wonders why Jack's motive.
00:20The latter wants to surprise people for Christmas, but his car breaks down, and he doesn't know
00:24where else to go due to a severe storm.
00:27Darlene and Jack seem to have a lot of history, and since the two reunite after 19 years,
00:31their conversation turns nostalgic.
00:34As Darlene talks about old times, Jack talks about her daughter, Sally.
00:38Soon, Darlene discovers Jack's true colors, which leads Darlene down a dangerous path.
00:44Toward the end, we understand what happened with Sally 20 years ago, why Jack returns,
00:49and what he wants Darlene to do.
00:51Here's everything you need to know about the ending, spoilers for the film's ending follow.
00:55The Apology begins with Darlene and her friend, Gretchen, cooking the Christmas meal at the
01:00former's place.
01:02Darlene checks a video of her giving an interview about the disappearance of Sally and helping
01:06other families dealing with similar circumstances.
01:08After Gretchen leaves, Jack comes to Darlene's house, and the two catch up.
01:13We learn that Jack and Darlene slept with each other, following which Jack left his
01:16wife and the entire family.
01:18Soon, Jack brings up the disappearance of Sally and asks Darlene what she will do if
01:23she ever meets her daughter's abductor.
01:25Jack tries to bring out a dark side in Darlene, and later when the conversation topic changes,
01:30he tries to kiss her.
01:32But Darlene refuses, and Jack starts to talk about Sally again.
01:36Jack confesses he knows what happened to Sally.
01:39As Jack reveals the details, Sally begins to fear Jack and tries to run away.
01:44But Jack doesn't allow her to contact anyone and makes her listen to the complete story.
01:48At first, Jack tells how he found Sally walking on the road and decided to give her a ride.
01:53He took her to the lake point, and the two kissed as they began to talk.
01:57Later, Sally started screaming.
02:00To stop her from creating a scene, he placed his hand on her mouth and pushed hard.
02:05Due to this, her neck broke, and he ended up killing her.
02:08Although Jack maintains that it was all a big mistake and he didn't do anything on purpose,
02:13Darlene doesn't believe in him.
02:15After a bit of fighting and struggling, Darlene gets control of Jack.
02:19She ties him up with zip ties and shoots him in the leg due to her increasing rage.
02:24Jack enjoys this and wants Darlene to kill him, but she decides against it.
02:28Jack frees himself, chases Darlene, and tries to kill her.
02:32But Darlene manages to escape and ties him up once again.
02:36By this time, Gretchen arrives at the house after hearing the gunshot and finds Darlene
02:39tying Jack.
02:41After Gretchen and Darlene tie Jack, he tells the complete story, but this time, Darlene
02:45makes him tell the actual truth.
02:48Jack confesses that he raped Sally and killed her.
02:51The revelation makes the audience wonder why Jack did so and is left with other questions.
02:56Let us shed some light on all of them.
02:59Why did Jack rape and kill Sally?
03:01Jack likely raped Sally because he loved Darlene and saw Darlene in Sally.
03:06So, in Sally's moment of vulnerability, Jack takes advantage of her and rapes her.
03:11But, when Sally started screaming, he tried to subdue her by placing his hand on her mouth.
03:16Unfortunately, Jack applied too much pressure, breaking Sally's neck.
03:21When Jack sees Darlene, he confesses how much he loves her.
03:25Numerous incidents in their past point toward this.
03:27First, he gifts Darlene a book and some chocolates as part of the reading and eating chocolate
03:32family tradition.
03:34Darlene reveals that Jack started the tradition by giving everyone a book and chocolates.
03:38However, he did so because he didn't want anyone to notice he was giving Darlene the
03:43same gift which meant the most to her.
03:45Jack also confesses that he loved Darlene but didn't ask her to be with him because
03:49the two were married to other people.
03:51Later, Jack tried to kiss Darlene in the kitchen and would have gone ahead if Darlene hadn't
03:55refused.
03:57All these instances prove that Jack was and continues to be in love with Darlene.
04:01When the man first narratives the incident with Sally, he says that Sally looked so familiar
04:05to Darlene, due to which he let himself go.
04:08The statement is a convoluted way of Jack saying that since he couldn't be with Darlene,
04:13he tried to sleep with her daughter, Sally.
04:15As the film progresses, Jack's statement slowly changes.
04:19At first, he says, he and Sally had consensual intercourse before the latter started screaming.
04:25However, Jack's conviction behind the statement begins to decrease as the movie unfolds.
04:30The behavioral pattern shows how delusional Jack is.
04:34To begin with, Jack believes that Darlene needs closure and sees himself as the hero
04:38who provides it.
04:39Jack is in denial regarding the incident with Sally because he cannot believe he was
04:43wrong and committed a gruesome crime.
04:45Thus, if we look at all the facets, we realize that Jack has always been in love with Darlene.
04:50However, since he couldn't be with her, he chose the second best option, Darlene's daughter,
04:56Sally.
04:57But, after realizing that he raped a 16-year-old girl who could expose him, Jack couldn't risk
05:01losing everything and decided to calm Sally down.
05:05But Sally wouldn't, so Jack killed her and later buried her in a secret place.
05:10Where is Sally buried?
05:12Jack buried Sally in the same spot where he raped and killed Sally.
05:16Jack's entire crime was an impulsive act.
05:19From the moment he gave Sally a ride in his vehicle, he didn't know what he was going
05:22to do.
05:24When Jack hugged Sally while she complained about Darlene's alcoholism, he mistook it
05:28as a sign to proceed further.
05:30Once Jack began, he couldn't stop himself, and when Sally shouted, Jack became alert.
05:35He wanted to be safe and not let anyone find out about his actions.
05:39So, intentionally or unintentionally, Jack killed Sally and buried her in the same place
05:44because he didn't know any other place and had to act quickly.
05:47Thus, Jack buried Sally in the same place where he raped and killed her.
05:52Why does Darlene not kill Jack?
05:55Jack returns to meet Darlene after seeing her recent interview.
05:58The man wants to unburden all the traumatic emotions and start afresh.
06:03Jack pities himself and believes that he needs to be punished.
06:06So, he makes Darlene get in touch with her darker side and begs her to kill him.
06:11To Jack, that's the ultimate punishment that anyone can get.
06:15However, Jack is wrong because the ultimate punishment is to spend his time in prison.
06:20Jack doesn't want to take accountability for his mistakes and finds death and escape.
06:25But Darlene doesn't kill Jack.
06:27Although she has enough reason, motivation, and drive to kill Jack, she doesn't shoot
06:31him because Darlene wants Jack to face his fate head-on.
06:35That's all for now folks.
