00:00Hi, welcome back to my channel.
00:02In this video, I will explain the ending of The Artful Dodger.
00:04So, let's begin.
00:06With James McNamara, David Marr, and David Taylor at the helm of creation, Hulu's The
00:10Artful Dodger is a historical crime drama series that is a spin-off that features characters
00:15from Oliver Twist written by Charles Dickens.
00:18Set in the 1850s, the narrative focuses on a former pickpocket named Jack Dawkins, referred
00:22to as the Artful Dodger, who has decided to put his fast and steady fingers to good use
00:27by becoming a surgeon.
00:29With the arrival of an old acquaintance named Fagin returns, Jack's haunting past catches
00:33up with him and tempts him to get back to his old ways.
00:36Meanwhile, Lady Belle, the governor's daughter, poses a greater threat to the heart of the
00:40Artful Dodger.
00:41Here's everything you need to know about the ending, just to let you know this video will
00:44contain spoilers.
00:46Fagin was like a father to Jack, and he had picked him off the streets and trained him
00:49as a pickpocket till Jack was 13 years old, and they had separated.
00:54Jack was once called the Prince of Thieves, from the novel Oliver Twist, and those were
00:57the very skills, quick hands, that had helped him become a surgeon.
01:01When Jack had been placed in jail as a child, Fagin had been unable to help him, and it
01:05was clear that Jack was abandoned.
01:08From then on, Jack carried some resentment towards Fagin until they met 15 years later.
01:13During this time, Jack learned surgery and found work as a navy surgeon before being
01:16recommended to a hospital in Australia, where he is currently employed.
01:20After all these years, he meets Fagin, who has found him as a convict waiting for punishment.
01:25To save himself, Jack takes Fagin under his wing as his servant, not knowing that Fagin
01:29has deliberately sought him out for his own reasons.
01:32Why do Jack and Fagin make so many enemies?
01:36Fagin is always looking for opportunities to make some quick money, and initially, even
01:40Jack is in need of that to settle some gambling debts.
01:43Fagin ends up stealing some rubies, but he finds that they are unsaleable.
01:47They then decide to steal some money from Captain Gain's house, and that backfires because
01:51the money is already stolen by someone else, who later goes on to become allies, but in
01:55the meantime, Gain's eye is on Jack and Fagin.
01:58It doesn't really end here, with the duo always escaping the captain's scrutiny through
02:02a stroke of luck but constantly calling suspicion upon themselves.
02:05It mostly starts because of Fagin and continues because Jack fights with Belle, which pushes
02:09him to become an unreasonable perfectionist in his goals.
02:13The basic point is that Jack is hell-bent on continuing his life as a surgeon, but due
02:17to the return of Fagin, he is getting more and more involved in being a criminal, and
02:21he can no longer deny that this is also a calling of his.
02:24Outcomes of Belle and Jack's Partnership
02:27Belle has always wanted to be a surgeon, and when she gets the opportunity to hold something
02:30over Jack, she takes it and blackmails him into teaching her the trade.
02:35There is some initial friction because Belle has plenty of theoretical knowledge while
02:38Jack has worked in the field, in addition to the difference in philosophies that this
02:41results in.
02:43But with time, both of them learn to work with each other, and Jack finds that Belle
02:46has enough knowledge for him to borrow from, while Belle discovers that Jack actually encourages
02:50her to study and train, unlike the other men in her life.
02:53They work together to start using anesthetics, which were previously not allowed.
02:58Also, Belle finds a way to avoid infections in patients, and these two learn to manipulate
03:02the perennially drunk head surgeon to step back so that the patients are in safer hands.
03:07During this time, there is a rivalry between Jack and Smead for the post of the next head
03:10surgeon.
03:12Smead is not a bad man, but he has a tendency to place the welfare of his patients next
03:16to his own selfish interests, which are tackled by Jack and Belle from time to time.
03:20Jack and Belle eventually fall in love, and Belle hints that she wants to marry Jack.
03:25She tries to convince her mother, Jane, to like him more, but that simply backfires when
03:29Jane tells Jack to break up with Belle or risk losing his career entirely.
03:34That works, and Jack's rude manner causes the couple to break up.
03:38In a fit of anger and wanting to move on from the city, Jack agrees to help Fagin with the
03:41robbery of the gold from the Bank of England and then escape from Australia.
03:45Are Jack and Fagin safe?
03:47The biggest but best twist of The Artful Dodger was the return of Oliver Twist as the unexpected
03:52villain of the show.
03:54Fagin and Jack's plan is to steal the gold from the governor's house, but someone beats
03:57them to it, and it turns out to be Oliver Twist himself, who gives credit for his evil
04:01genius to Fagin's upbringing.
04:03However, no one suspects Oliver of the crime, and Gaines threatens to hang Fagin if he is
04:07not able to get Jack to the gallows for him.
04:10Therefore, Fagin has no choice but to betray Jack once again, the way he did many years
04:14ago.
04:16In the meantime, Jack is also presented with some upsetting news.
04:20He finds that Belle is prone to an aneurysm, and she can die anytime, so he has to find
04:24a way to operate on her.
04:25Jane is in denial about her daughter's condition, but that stops neither of them.
04:30Belle and Jack find that her condition may be inoperable, and Belle gives up all hope.
04:34As for Jack, he tries again with a cadaver and figures out that there may be a way to
04:38save Belle's life after all.
04:41He has to bring an unconscious Belle to the hospital to operate on, and while he does
04:44his work, Gaines is holding a gun to his head to shoot at any time.
04:48The moment Jack is done with his operation, Gaines drags him away, and they meet Fagin
04:52on the way.
04:53It looks like Fagin has betrayed Jack, but at the last minute, he shoots Gaines after
04:57taking his pardon from him.
05:00As for Jack, he runs to check up on Belle, and at the end of the artful dodger, he sees
05:03that she has regained consciousness, meaning that the surgery was successful.
05:07Concerning the stolen gold, Fagin has managed to get it back by creating a distraction for
05:11Oliver's carriages, though we feel bad for Fanny, who was innocently caught in all this.
05:16The recovery of the gold also means that the governor has preserved his job, and everyone
05:20is happy about it.
05:22Oliver is dragged back to jail, where he and Fagin make up with each other.
05:26Fagin has a pardon with him, which means that he will be released from prison.
05:30As for Oliver, he may be granted a pardon by the governor for saving his daughter.
05:34Additionally, since Snead has accepted that Oliver is the better surgeon, he may also
05:38be promoted to chief surgeon, which would give him enough standing in society to marry Belle.
05:43That's all for now folks!
