Hello there and welcome to your latest update on Storm Isha, which is going to bring some
00:05
very strong and damaging gusts of wind as well as some heavy rain across the country
00:10
later on Sunday and into Monday morning.
00:13
So looking at the bigger picture, powerful jet stream shooting across the Atlantic at
00:19
the moment is helping to deepen Isha over the next 24 hours and as this storm system
00:24
moves towards us, tight isobars across the UK indicating very strong and damaging gusts
00:29
of wind and it will also be combined with some heavy rain.
00:33
So we're expecting some disruption, particularly later on Sunday and into the start of Monday.
00:39
So let's take a look at the wind gusts in detail.
00:42
This is for midday on Sunday.
00:43
We can see gales just starting to develop around some western coasts, but as we play
00:48
the sequence through, we can see how widely across the UK we'll see gusts around 50 miles
00:53
an hour and then locally over the hills and around the coast, we could see 60, 70, perhaps
00:58
even 80 miles an hour as we head into the evening time, which is going to lead to some
01:02
disruption.
01:03
We could start to see the risk of some tiles being blown off roofs in places as well as
01:08
some large branches and possible trees coming down, which will then lead to some travel
01:12
disruption.
01:14
Then as we head into the early hours, the centre of Isha starts to cross northern Scotland.
01:17
We could see some very strong winds developing here, 70, 80 miles an hour or so.
01:23
Elsewhere, they do start to ease a little bit into the early hours, but a squeeze in
01:27
the isobars could give some very strong winds across south-east England as well, which takes
01:32
us then through into Monday morning.
01:34
The winds start to ease, still gusts of 30 to 40 miles an hour in places, but perhaps
01:40
a little bit less disruptive as we head towards lunchtime on Monday.
01:45
So looking at the rain in detail for Sunday, a bright start for many but cloud in the west
01:51
and this system quickly moves in and we see outbreaks of heavy rain pushing in.
01:55
This combined with the strong winds will lead to some tricky travelling conditions if you
01:59
are moving across the country through Sunday evening and then the system moves out of the
02:04
way through into Monday, leaving a mixture of blustery showers.
02:08
For the Monday morning commute, there'll be a lot of surface spray on the roads.
02:12
There could be some localised flooding in places too, so do take care on that side.
02:18
So looking at the warning details for Sunday and into Monday, we have rain warnings across
02:23
parts of Wales, north-west England, southern Scotland and central Scotland.
02:28
Some of this rain combined with snowmelt is likely to lead to some localised flooding
02:32
issues, so do stay tuned to your local radio and the Met Office forecast over the next
02:39
few days as the forecast does remain unsettled.
02:43
So then also taking a look at our wind warnings, well a wind warning covers the whole of the
02:48
UK through Sunday and into Monday morning.
02:51
We could see gusts of 50-60mph quite widely and then locally 70-80mph around those exposed
02:58
coasts and over the higher ground too.
03:00
The amber areas are where the higher gusts are more likely, but we could see those stronger
03:05
winds in the yellow area too, so do take care if you are travelling through Sunday evening
03:10
in particular and overnight into Monday.
03:14
Storm Esher rattling in, we could see some travel disruption across the UK, heavy rain
03:19
leading to some flooding in places too and those strong winds could lead to some disruption.
03:27
So a lot going on with Storm Esher, so do stay tuned to the forecast over the coming
03:31
days.
03:32
See you soon.
