00:00
Happy New Year from everyone at the Met Office.
00:03
Certainly, the weather is going to be blowing a few cobwebs away
00:06
on New Year's Day, a blustery day with a gusty wind.
00:09
Bright spells for many, however, and most places
00:13
will be dry for much of the day.
00:15
And it is going to be a very mild start to 2022.
00:21
There's a little bit of patchy rain around
00:22
across parts of Scotland through New Year's Eve.
00:25
Maybe it'll shower for Northern Ireland as well.
00:28
But the bulk of England and Wales staying dry, quite cloudy.
00:31
And as I said, it is very mild if you're out celebrating
00:35
the start of the new year.
00:37
Bit of rain clearing away from Scotland
00:39
by the time we get to dawn.
00:40
So most places will start dry on Saturday,
00:44
but with a lot of cloud.
00:45
And again, the winds continuing to come up from the south
00:48
and keeping those temperatures well above average
00:50
for the time of year.
00:51
We're starting New Year's Day in double figures.
00:54
Also starting windy, particularly
00:56
along the West Coast.
00:57
Very blustery across the western side of Scotland.
01:01
Gusts of 60, maybe 70 miles an hour for a time
01:03
across the Western Isles.
01:04
They'll ease steadily through the day.
01:06
We'll see this zone of thicker clouds with patchy rain
01:09
working from west to east across England and Wales,
01:12
but really fizzling out as it does so.
01:14
And arriving across East England and the southeast,
01:16
perhaps late in the afternoon.
01:18
Showers will keep going in Western Scotland,
01:20
but it will stay windy.
01:21
But elsewhere, say, much of the day
01:24
will be dry and a bit brighter than recently,
01:26
with a better chance of seeing some sunny spells.
01:29
That wind will be blowing the cobwebs away for sure,
01:31
but it will also be continuing to bring mild air temperatures
01:35
again widely into the teens.
01:38
We could see highs once more of 14 or 15 degrees Celsius.
01:43
Through the evening, that patchy rain
01:45
could easily continue across the southeast,
01:47
especially across parts of Kent.
01:49
And then we look further west as zones of heavy showers
01:52
come into England and Wales to start Sunday.
01:55
That will clear out into the North Sea.
01:57
But then look at this, another little feature
01:59
that needs watching, actually.
02:00
Really nasty.
02:01
This could have some quite heavy rain and some gusty winds
02:04
as it moves in on Sunday morning across the southwest
02:07
and then spreads more widely across England and Wales
02:10
during Sunday.
02:11
Some uncertainty about the intensity
02:12
and the exact position, but that could
02:14
bring a spell of very heavy rain and gusty winds.
02:18
We'll keep a mixture of sunshine and showers
02:19
for Scotland and Northern Ireland.
02:21
Quite gusty winds all the time, but especially
02:23
on Sunday along the south coast.
02:26
Still pretty mild, but temperatures just dropping down
02:30
a degree or so and obviously feeling
02:32
pretty grim under that zone of wet and windy weather coming
02:35
into central areas.
02:36
Low pressure continuing to dominate,
02:38
but in the hour we will see a shift.
02:40
We're going to lose the southwesterly winds
02:43
and introduce the winds more from the north
02:45
as we go through Monday and more particularly
02:47
into Tuesday and Wednesday.
02:49
A ridge of high pressure should bring some brighter skies,
02:53
but we'll notice the change in temperatures in particular
02:55
if we just rewind back to New Year's Day.
02:59
Very mild air across the UK, but things
03:01
start to turn cooler through Sunday and Monday
03:05
and then we open the door to these northerly winds
03:07
bringing much colder air by Tuesday and Wednesday.
03:11
So quite a change on the way through the middle part
03:14
of the week, but a very mild start to 2022.
03:18
Watch out for some heavy showers,
03:19
especially across the south during the course of Sunday.
03:23
