00:00Azila Hadri, one of the two former Special Actions Unit officers convicted of murdering

00:06Mongolian Altantuya Sharibu, had his death penalty commuted to a 40-year jail term.

00:13The decision followed a letter from Altantuya's father, Sharibu Satef, in support of Azila's

00:19application.

00:20A federal court review panel accepted Azila's application for a sentence reduction today.

00:26Azila, 48, was also ordered to be given the mandatory minimum 12 strokes of the rotun.

00:33The court heard today that Altantuya was a foreign spy and that Azila had received instructions

00:39from his superior to commit the crime as she possessed classified information about the

00:44country.

00:45Azila's case was brought under the revision of the Sentence of Death and Imprisonment

00:50for Natural Life Act 2023, which gives judges the option of imposing a jail term instead

00:56of capital punishment in murder cases.
