00:04so let's begin.
00:06In Netflix's Toperation Nation or Krypton and Polska, director Piotr Kumyk and his team
00:11blend satire with romantic comedy to create a quintessentially Polish story.
00:16The plot primarily follows Stasik Sulkowski and Pola Ratajczyk, two young people who are
00:20the Romeo and Juliet of Polish politics.
00:24While Stasik becomes increasingly involved in far-right politics, Pola is a hardcore
00:28leftist.
00:29The two meet and there is an immediate attraction.
00:32After realizing Pola's political leaning, Stasik decides to hide his own political affiliation.
00:38But as the film progresses, that becomes quite impossible as Pola decides to do her
00:41MVA, thesis on the right-wing group he is part of, and the group leader hatches an insidious
00:46plan to establish his outfit on the national stage.

00:55As a film, Operation Nation has a surreal undertone and it's quite similar to Taika
00:59Waititi's Jojo Rabbit.
01:01The film opens with the Radical Youth Association, ZMR, or RYS, a nationalist organization, celebrating
01:07Hitler's 132nd birthday.
01:10Its members are not necessarily the most fear-inducing representatives of the European far-right.
01:16If anything, they are average bigoted people who have found an outlet to vent their frustration.
01:20The problem is that the transition from verbal to violent is quite rapid for these people.
01:25Most of them, including their leader, Roman, Boris Scyc, are arrested by the police, only
01:30to be acquitted of their crimes by the court later.
01:33Stasik, a resident of Białystok, was bound for soccer greatness, but a knee injury ended
01:38his career abruptly.
01:40Now, he is forced to share a room with his K-pop fan sister at his parents' home.
01:45He has a dead-end job with no real prospects for the future.
01:49Stasik feels horribly stuck in his life and doesn't know how to free himself from his
01:52current circumstances.
01:54Meanwhile, Pola decides to move back home to Białystok after catching her boyfriend,
01:58the pretentious Khajiitin, in bed with another girl.
02:02Roman is Stasik's cousin.
02:04To pay him back for picking him up from practice all the time, Stasik comes to get Roman and
02:08his friends from the court.
02:10And this effectively becomes Stasik's introduction to the ZMR ideology.
02:14He never seems interested in what Roman preaches about culture and gender, though he does seem
02:18to want a big traditional Polish family someday.
02:22Stasik and Pola meet at a bar when a drunken leftist hits on the ladder, and Roman sends
02:26Stasik to beat up the said leftist.
02:28Immediately, there is chemistry and planning for the future.
02:32Pola envisions the two of them tied to a tree during a protest, while Stasik daydreams about
02:36being married to Pola with children.
02:39It doesn't take long for Stasik to realize that Pola is a leftist.
02:43Embarrassed by his current political affiliation, he decides to hide it from her.
02:48Meanwhile, Roman plans to bomb a synagogue and moves the group to a church property,
02:52where the well-meaning priest takes them in.
02:54None of them have any prior experience with explosives, so they find an Italian fascist
02:58to help them with it.
03:00Ironically, the man gets severely beaten up by Polish racists for his darker skin color
03:04and is admitted to a hospital.
03:06Roman starts crying when he visits the man, as he realizes that his plans to blow up a
03:10synagogue are over.
03:12Roman's three lackeys, Mariusz, Brodzan, and Miesko, get into a fight with people running
03:17a kebab shop over a Syrian song playing on the radio, during which Miesko inadvertently
03:22gets stabbed.
03:23Although Miesko is admitted to the hospital and survives the ordeal, protests and counter-protests
03:28begin in front of the kebab shop, and soon, there is a riot.
03:32Do Stasik and Pola end up together?
03:35Yes, Stasik and Pola end up together in Operation Nation.
03:39Directionless as he is, Stasik begins hanging out with Roman and his lackeys, even though
03:43he doesn't agree with them.
03:45His parents think that he is gay, and he has to tell them about Pola.
03:49When Pola starts doing her thesis on ZMR, it becomes tricky for Stasik to hide the truth.
03:55She eventually finds out during the riot.
03:58During the subsequent confrontation on the back of a police van, they call each other
04:01hypocrites and seemingly break up.
04:03The pink-colored, white Pride T-shirt Stasik showed up at the protest wearing is misconstrued
04:08as a show of support by the local LGBTQ community, who invites him to a gathering.
04:13Sensing an opportunity, Roman encourages him to attend.
04:17Mariusz convinces the others to let him join Stasik, and it becomes quite apparent that
04:21Mariusz is gay.
04:22Roman decides to plant an explosive device at the upcoming Pride parade, and Stasik tries
04:27to stop them but gets beaten up.
04:29They tie him to a chair and leave Miesko behind to watch over him.
04:33Stasik manages to call Pola, who returns to Bialystok, knocks Miesko out, and frees Stasik.
04:39They rush to the parade but fail to find the explosive.
04:42However, when Roman attempts to detonate it, he fails.
04:46It turns out that Mariusz has decided to embrace who he really is and disarmed the bomb.
04:51Stasik and Pola reunite, and toward the end of the film, she gets her master's degree,
04:55and they move in together.
04:57Why does Roman become a minister?
05:00Despite the reunion of Stasik and Pola, the film ends on a depressing note.
05:04Brodzin takes responsibility for all that happened and goes to jail, while Roman and
05:08Miesko are freed.
05:10In the final scene of the film, a recently promoted minister, Wojtas, comes to the group's
05:14hideout and tells Roman that he wants him as his deputy.
05:18When Roman asks what about everything he has done, Wojtas dismisses them as youthful discretion.
05:23The film ends right after Roman turns and looks directly at the camera.
05:27This scene is likely meant to be a critique of the current government in Poland, controlled
05:30by the right-wing political party Law and Justice or Pro Eisbrodliwsk.
05:35Even though Stasik and Pola won the battle and helped prevent a massive disaster, they
05:39lost the war, with Roman now becoming a deputy minister.
