ABUHB explains it plans to reduce the use of non sterile gloves

00:00I think you'll start to see that staff won't be wearing gloves for routine procedures as

00:24we move forward. It's no safer to have gloves on than using good hand washing techniques.

00:32Also we've got to think of our future. We will save a lot of money by not wearing these

00:36gloves inappropriately. But also for our green future, we've got to save the NHS and future

00:44generations that are coming behind us. Sometimes the general public are not aware and feel

00:50that staff should wear gloves more than they do. So staff should be wearing gloves if they're

00:55going to be in contact with any bodily fluids, if they're emptying catheters, if they're

01:00going to be suctioning patients' ET tubes, that sort of thing. We don't need gloves if

01:05we're holding a patient's hand. If we're feeding patients, we don't need gloves. But obviously

01:10we would need them if we're drawing up any sort of IV medications or a patient's more

01:15immunocompromised. But generally there's more opportunity not to wear gloves than

01:21there is to wear gloves. So I think if we can reduce something like glove use, if we

01:28impacted that right across the health board, that money is going to be utilised in a far

01:33more productive way for the patients that we see. The less that we put in landfill,

01:41the greener that we can become. We secure a future for generations of the NHS and generations

01:47that come behind us.
