Unison speaks out against Llancaiach Fawr closure

With the news of Llancaiach Fawr closing at the end of the year, trade unions, historians, local residents and other supporters will hold a meeting at the site this weekend in an effort to keep the site alive, and put pressure on the council to protect the manor at all costs.

00:07and in recent years has provided a fascinating insight into what life was like as a wealthy

00:12aristocrat in South Wales through the years. It's hosted kings and nobility but now its

00:17days are numbered as the site will be closing down at the end of the year as part of cost

00:21cutting measures from Caerphilly Council, a move that has been opposed by a number of

00:25organisations including the trade union Unison who called it the end of an era. The councillor

00:31said that the site costs almost half a million pounds in subsidies every year from the council

00:36so in order to make up a £45 million budget gap tough decisions have had to be made. A

00:43spokesperson for Unison says that it's a vital cultural and educational centre and provides

00:47employment for a dedicated team of staff. There have been outside talks of keeping part

00:53of the site open but the council are reluctant to disclose any information at this point.
