Welsh seaside landmark to close it’s doors this year

Coney Beach has been a staple of Welsh seaside holidays for over a century, but the people in charge of the site have officially announced via Facebook that they’ll be closing their doors this October for the final time.

00:00The Welsh Seaside is set to lose an icon, as Coney Beach in Portfall will be closing

00:07its doors for the final time later on this year.

00:12The funfair has been welcoming visitors for over a century, and the Evans family, who

00:16own the site, have officially announced that this summer will be the last for Coney Beach,

00:20and thanked the generations of people who had visited the park in the past, and shared

00:24in the legacy that Coney Beach will leave behind.

00:28Thousands of people have seen the Facebook post announcing the closure, with 4,000 people

00:32commenting, reminiscing about memories they had at the site over the years.

00:38It comes amid a massive regeneration project which is set to start over the next few years,

00:42with 1,100 new homes across three sites overlooking the seafront, and developers have said in master

00:48plans that parts of the traditional seafront will remain, but 200 homes could be built on

00:53the site of Coney Beach in the future if all plans go ahead.

00:59High Tide, where much of the world famous Elvis Festival is partly held, is set to stay open,

01:04so while one stalwart of Portfall, Coney Beach, will close, the Elvis Festival, the biggest

01:08of his kind outside of the USA, will continue as planned.

01:14It opens the conversations around the need for new homes in areas like Portfall, and the

01:18closure of iconic sites like Coney Beach, with some online saying it will be a ghost town

01:23without the funfair, but others acknowledging the need for some development.

01:30Wales has already lost Oakwood this year, so as another staple of Welsh holidays closes

01:34its doors for the last time, people will be questioning what could be next to face the chopping block.
