00:09Smith died peacefully on Friday, September 27, per a statement released by her family.
00:14It is with great sadness we have to announce the death of Dame Maggie Smith.
00:18She passed away peacefully in hospital early this morning, Friday, 27 September.
00:23An intensely private person, she was with friends and family at the end.
00:27She leaves two sons and five loving grandchildren,
00:30who are devastated by the loss of their extraordinary mother and grandmother.
00:34Smith was best known and beloved for her role as Professor
00:37McGonagall in the Harry Potter franchise.
00:44She was also heavily recognized for her work in ITV and PBS's Downton Abbey.

00:57Smith earned early acclaim with a Best Actress Oscar in 1970
01:01for her starring role in The Prime of Miss Jean Brody.
01:04That was followed nine years later by an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress

01:10She was also nominated for four other Oscars for her Best Actress and Supporting Turns.
01:16In 1989, Queen Elizabeth II bestowed Smith with the title of Dame
01:21for her dramatic accomplishments.
01:22The Queen granted her another distinction in 2014,
01:26making her the 47th member of the Order of Companions of Honor
01:30in the company of such other recipients as Sir Ian McKellen and Dame Judi Dench.
