00:00Junji Ito is a horror manga artist from Japan. He's very famous for his manga entitled Uzumaki,
00:04and no, we're not talking about that anime character that goes BELIEVE IT every three
00:07seconds. It's a classic horror manga about spirals that is getting adapted into an anime soon. The
00:12stories make your skin crawl. But this is Know Your Meme, after all, not an anime podcast,
00:15so let's get into Junji Ito's memes, and boy, there are many.
00:18My favorite Ito story is the Enigma of Amigara Fault. In one scene, the character neurotically
00:22gets obsessed with this person-sized hole, so much so that he feels the need to climb into it,
00:26and keep going, deeper within. And well, if you have claustrophobia, this one will annihilate you.
00:30Regardless, this image of the dude crawling in the hole screaming,
00:32this is my hole, it was made for me, it became a meme. It turns out that,
00:35out of context, this is a very hilarious panel. There are tons and tons of redraws of the panels,
00:39Super Mario Sunshine, Wile E. Coyote, Wallace and Gromit, edited into a pumpkin. A lot of
00:43panels Junji Ito draws end up being very funny out of context. Another example might be this
00:46silly shark page. Gashunk! Clearly the noise a shark makes when it kicks down a door. Looking
00:50at this image makes me feel old. In particular, the door slamming on the guy and the dude opening
00:54up the door were used a lot in the meme world. You could throw anything behind that, like Shrek,
00:57or a tinier Shrek, or an even tinier Shrek.
