00:00No member state at the United Nations should be left behind despite their unique challenges.
00:06A point Foreign and CARICOM Affairs Minister Dr. Emer Brown raised at a meeting of world leaders
00:12who attended the UN Summit of the Future on September 23rd.
00:16Dr. Brown said the summit is critical in renewing global solidarity and commitment
00:21toward the goals that have been set and finding a clear path to overcoming the challenges faced.
00:28He has expressed concerns about the state of the Caribbean region as it pertains to gun trafficking.
00:34The ease of access to illegal firearms in the Caribbean countries continues to harm our societies
00:41with unacceptable consequences.
00:44In this context, it is imperative that there is better cooperation within and amongst national,
00:51regional and global stakeholders to combat, prevent and eradicate the illicit trade in small arms and light weapons.
01:00On an international level, the minister called for bold and decisive action
01:05geared towards ending global conflict and sustaining peace.
01:09It is truly regrettable that at this time the international community is failing
01:16at the maintenance of peace and security globally.
01:21The unprecedented escalation in the number and scale of conflicts
01:26contradicts the very purpose for which the United Nations was built.
01:31Among other issues addressed by Minister Brown was a need for a reform of the international financial architecture
01:38and the provision of adequate resources and opportunities for young people
01:42to reach their fullest potential against the backdrop of sustainable development.
01:47He also highlighted the role that science and technology, including artificial intelligence, play in that development
01:53but said the growing dependency in this area comes with a magnitude of risks.
01:58Therefore, as a small developing state, we are not only advocating for cooperation aimed at bridging the digital divide
02:07but also for strengthening our capacity in cyber security to address those risks.
