00:01In this video, I will explain the ending of Doctor Who's 60th anniversary specials,

00:05so let's begin and just to let you know this video will contain spoilers.

00:09The final Doctor Who's 60th anniversary special, The Giggle, saw the Doctor defeat

00:13the Toymaker, with the most shocking regeneration story to date.

00:18Regeneration is the secret of Doctor Who's success.

00:20In-universe, it is a lottery, with the Doctor never knowing what to expect.

00:25In reality, though, regeneration allows Doctor Who to continually reinvent itself for every

00:29regeneration.

00:31The Doctor Who's 60th anniversary specials had already been set up as a surprising regeneration

00:35tale.

00:36The end of The Power of the Doctor saw Jodie Whittaker's 13th Doctor unexpectedly regenerate

00:41into a familiar face.

00:42David Tennant's return as the 14th Doctor served as the great mystery of the Doctor

00:46Who anniversary specials, although in truth most viewers were just happy to have Tennant

00:50and Catherine Tate's Donna Noble back.

00:53Another regeneration was always on the cards for this story, though, given Shuddy Gatwa's

00:5615th Doctor was confirmed to appear in the specials.

00:59But, surprisingly, things took a twist that had never been seen before in Doctor Who history.

01:05The final Doctor Who anniversary special, The Giggle, saw the Toymaker attempt to force

01:09a regeneration.

01:10The Doctor had challenged the Toymaker to win the best of three, but the Toymaker pointed

01:14out that both games to date had been with different Doctors.

01:17Still furious because the Doctor had dared challenge him, the Toymaker insisted a regeneration

01:22needed to be forced so the games could continue.

01:25He shot the Doctor through one heart with the Galvanic Beam.

01:28But the Toymaker's forced regeneration went drastically wrong, because the Doctor didn't

01:31regenerate at all, he went through what he called a Spy Generation, which is apparently

01:35a Time Lord myth where a regeneration instead results in the creation of two separate beings

01:39who can go on to live their own lives.

01:42According to Russell T. Davies, as revealed in Doctor Who Unleashed, this had a ripple

01:45effect on the Doctor's every regeneration, creating splintered timelines in which each

01:49incarnaton of the Doctor did not regenerate.

01:52This was arguably set up in Doctor Who's Tales of the Tardis spin-offs, which featured

01:56older versions of classic Doctors, with Sylvester McCoy's Seventh Doctor claiming it is tied

02:00to timelines.

02:01It's possible bi-regeneration can only be done by a being who has unlimited regeneration

02:05energy, such as he Timeless Child.

02:08How the Doctors Defeated the Toymaker

02:11The Giggle essentially became an unexpected Doctor Who multi-Doctor story, traditionally

02:15associated with anniversary years.

02:17The Fourteenth and Fifteenth Doctors teamed up against the Toymaker, and they challenged

02:21him to a game that gave them a decided advantage, a simple game of catch the ball.

02:25They were able to team up against him, frequently tossing the ball to one another so the Toymaker

02:29couldn't predict the angle it would come from.

02:32They won the game, and the Toymaker faced defeat.

02:35With the Toymakers defeated, the Doctors banished the Toymaker from existence, essentially returning

02:39him to his own dimension beyond the boundaries of reality.

02:42Although the Doctors were triumphant, the Toymaker hinted he could still potentially

02:46return, he swore to the Doctor that his legions were coming.

02:49This may well foreshadow the little that is known of the upcoming Doctor Who Christmas

02:52special, in which Shuddigat was Fifteenth Doctor will encounter goblins, like the Toymaker,

02:57they could also be creatures of superstition as much as science, although the trailer has

03:00certainly shown them in a spaceship.

03:03In an earlier scene, the Toymaker celebrated his triumphs by bragging to the Doctor about

03:06all the beings he defeated.

03:09He had made the Doctors past a jigsaw puzzle, he declared, which may be a rather amusing

03:12way of explaining all Doctor Who's continuity problems, multiple destructions of Scarrow

03:17and Atlantis, contradictory claims about historical figures, and of course the unimaginable

03:21number of adventures told in tie-in media.

03:24This could even explain some of the various contradictions inherent in the timeless child

03:27retcon, but, having boasted about his rewriting of the Doctors' past, the Toymaker went on

03:31to celebrate the fact the dying master had lost a game and been transformed into his

03:35gold tooth for all eternity.

03:37The Toymaker was banished from reality, but his gold tooth was left behind.

03:41The Gigglehaw saw it picked up by a female hand, but it was unclear who's, presumably

03:45someone in-unit.

03:47This clearly sets up the Master's return on 21st-century Earth, an even more exciting

03:51idea given the potential of this latest unit team.

03:54Amusingly, the first of the Doctor Who anniversary specials saw Donna insist a man with a goatee

03:58should never be trusted, which seemed to foreshadow the Master as well.

04:02The Doctor Who anniversary specials finally explained why David Tennant returned as the

04:05Fifteenth Doctor, because there's a sense in which the Doctor had unfinished business.

04:10The Doctor is the one who runs, never taking the time to fully heal from the trauma they

04:14have suffered, never settling down and knowing the adventure of a family life.

04:18Donna offered the Fourteenth Doctor something he had never had before, a family.

04:23He chose to stay on Earth with the noble family but will presumably continue to have adventures

04:26given he has such strong ties to-unit.

04:29There have been repeated rumors of a unit spinoff, and this now seems more likely than

04:32ever before, but a spinoff starring David Tennant's Fourteenth Doctor on Earth.

04:37Such an Earthbound series would actually parallel John Pertwee's Third Doctor era, his incarnation

04:41was exiled to Earth for a couple of years, developing a loose family around him in an

04:45earlier unit team.

04:46It's exciting to see Doctor Who set this up again, with such a much-loved incarnation

04:50of the Doctor as Tennant.

04:52At first, the Doctor Who anniversary specials seemed to be setting up a scene in which the

04:56Doctors decided who should leave with the TARDIS.

04:59But Shuddigat was Fifteenth Doctor realized the laws of reality were still in flux due

05:02to the Toymaker's presence and that the Doctors had not claimed their prize.

05:06He knew exactly what they should get, he used a hammer to strike the TARDIS, and it too

05:10was duplicated.

05:12Now both the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Doctors have a TARDIS, almost identical but with one

05:16key difference, Gatwas has an additional jukebox.

05:19David Tennant's Fourteenth Doctor has stayed on Earth with a noble family.

05:23Shuddigat was Fifteenth Doctor, already demonstrating a commanding presence, has headed off in the

05:28TARDIS for adventures anew.

05:30His story will continue in the Doctor Who Christmas special, The Church on Ruby Road,

05:34where he meets with his first companion, Millie Gibson's Ruby Sunday.

05:37It will be thrilling to see what happens next.
