00:00It's their first meeting since Edouard Philippe's announcement that he will run for president
00:05in 2027. Ties between Macron and his former prime minister are weakening as the Horizons
00:11party leader embarks on a campaign trail that distances him from Emmanuel Macron and his
00:16politics.
00:17I know that when I speak to the president, I tell him things as I see them, how I think
00:22they are good for France. He does with them what he wants. Sometimes he listens to me
00:26and takes it on board, other times he doesn't take it on board. Whatever works for him.
00:32Prime Minister between 2017 and 2020, Edouard Philippe has firmly declared his support for
00:38the new Prime Minister Michel Barnier. He even went as far as taking his Horizons party
00:42MPs to meet with Barnier, all part of a campaign strategy in his pursuit for the Elysée in
00:502027.
00:51Edouard Philippe must remain part of the government in order to benefit from the legacy of Emmanuel
00:56Macron, but at the same time he must stand back and pursue his own agenda, which is to
01:00put himself forward as the next president in a way that appears natural. He has to be
01:05both in and out of politics by both supporting Barnier and breaking with Macron.
01:14His tactics seem to be working, as Michel Barnier has already declared that the MPs
01:19from Edouard Philippe's centre-right Horizons party will feature in the new government.
