00:00An academic and an economist have called for the National Council of Professors to
00:06be disbanded immediately following the council president being taken to court on seven charges
00:12of criminal breach of trust.
00:14Sharifa Munira Al-Atas, chair of GERAC, the Malaysian academic movement, said the council
00:20had yet to produce any significant scholarly contribution to the betterment of the country
00:25despite receiving government funds.
00:28She said the council had been used in the past to legitimize the ruling political party
00:32rather than to promote knowledge and ethical values that help and sustain nation-building.
00:38She added that the professors should engage in critical research and discourse and act
00:43as a check and balance rather than mouth the official line.
00:47Meanwhile, Nusari Ahmad Radi, chairman of Kazanah Research Institute, said he did not
00:52see a need for MPN as all professors are appointed by and affiliated with universities.
00:59He said although professors are free to form associations, it should not be at the expense
01:04of taxpayers' money.
01:07Last Wednesday, MPN President Radwan Cheh Rose claimed trial to seven charges of criminal
01:12breach of trust involving RM271,000 of the council's money.
