00:00The Trinidad and Tobago Cadet Force is one of the organizations in the country where
00:05young people can seek to enhance themselves through training in a number of areas, including
00:11skills and discipline.
00:13We're told it is in over 70 schools around the country, recruiting secondary school students
00:18generally between the ages of 12 and 19.
00:22This time, the 2024 intake is being enrolled, with training set to start around the middle
00:28of September.
00:29Public Affairs Officer of the TNT Cadet Force Major Randall Roberts says students who are
00:34interested can liaise with their school if there is a cadet unit there.
00:39If you follow our pages on our website, you can get the specific details.
00:43If you are going to a school that doesn't have a unit, there are other schools within
00:47your area that you may have the opportunity to join based on, you need to have your parental
00:52position and consent from the principal of the relevant schools.
00:57According to Major Roberts, the opportunities available to young people are many.
01:02So we have the traditional army cadet or infantry cadet battalions, we have a naval and aviation
01:09component, we have a medicine, these are youngsters who do culinary arts and cooking and steward
01:18at events and so forth.
01:19And then we have a music program, a band and co-op drums.
01:23In addition to that, the Cadet Steel Orchestra was relaunched.
01:27Major Roberts says they are in need of pens and other instruments, and donations are welcome.
01:34Against the backdrop of youth involvement in crime, some parents may choose the Cadet
01:38Force as a means of instilling a greater degree of discipline in their children.
01:43For example, when we go to camp, they know they have to make up the bed, they have to
01:47bathe at a particular time, they have to eat at a particular time, they do certain things
01:51in a structured and organized way, they have other latent skills that they don't necessarily
01:57do for themselves when they're home, right, cadets learn to cook.
02:01But Major Roberts says the foundation from the home is important.
02:05It's not just drop them off for us to manage, that's not, the parents have to be involved
02:10in the process, parents have to come and support, be there for the parents' meetings, be there
02:14supporting at the parades.
02:16We need youngsters who are coming with a sense of right and wrong.
02:20The Cadet Force is also looking for adult volunteers who will assist with supervision
02:25and management within the organization.
02:28According to Major Roberts, it is something that will especially be needed if the service
02:33is to expand to vocational schools.
