"Come out and support the women cricketers!"

That was the rallying cry made by Bajan cricket commentator Alex Jordan when she spoke on the Morning Edition programme on Thursday.
Transcript
00:00Bajan cricket commentator Alex Jordan is urging fans to come out and support the
00:04region's women cricketers in a bid to grow the game and get it on par with
00:09some of the other women's leagues around the world. I just want to say something
00:13really quickly because you know when we come from this part of the world it's
00:17not the same as other parts of the world. In other parts of the world women's
00:20cricket is thriving and normal it's a normal thing to go and watch it's a
00:24normal thing it's been going on for years. In our part of the world we're
00:27still waking up from some deep slumber. So really important for us to get
00:32behind our women for you guys to get behind the Trinbagonian women. Jordan
00:36cited the fact that two of the world's premier women's cricketers are from the
00:41Caribbean and together with the star quality of the international players
00:44taking part in this year's WCPL the games are bound to be entertaining and
00:49can be a fun outing for the entire family. And it's so ironic you know
00:54because we have two two cricketers one in Deandra Dalton right who is the
01:00captain of the said same TKR and one in Hayley Matthews the captain of the said
01:05same Barbados Royals who are two of the best cricketers this world has ever seen
01:10in the women's game and they come from here they come from bumped around by us
01:14you know big big names there's Jess Jonathan there's Chloe Tryon these are
01:18big international stars Jemima Rodrigues, Sheikha Pandey the rest of the
01:24world really knows these names and I want to encourage the West Indians the
01:28Caribbean people to come out fun for the whole family bring your boy children and
01:32your girl children. She even pointed out that sports and cricket in particular is
01:36fast becoming a viable career option for young women in the region. If you have a
01:41child a girl child and she's not playing cricket you are wasting time that one
01:47little girl can bring the whole family out of poverty you know the kind of
01:51money Hayley Matthews is making around the world. This is a viable way to make a living right it
01:58didn't come in my lifetime but right now women's cricket is flourishing
02:05franchise women's CPL our version of the franchise there's many more there's one
02:10in Australia one in England one in India big money my friend. And just to drive
02:16her point home Jordan highlighted the perks of the job. You can make your
02:20living you can see the world play cricket gain the admiration and belief
02:26of your nation and region inspire those around you and get to make a living
02:31playing a sport yes please I don't think we really understand I don't think we
02:37really understand how powerful a tool that is for empowerment not just for
02:42girls you empower girls and women you are empowering an entire community
