00:00Train fares across Scotland are set to increase after government ministers judged the scrapping
00:04of peak fares to have failed. If bought it to have been self-financing it would have had to
00:07have boosted passenger numbers by 10%, but it only achieved a 6.8% increase.
00:12This means that peak train fares will be re-implemented from the 27th of September,
00:16which on most routes is before 9.15am on weekdays and between 4.42pm and 6.11pm.
00:23During these periods an adult return ticket from Glasgow to Edinburgh will almost double
00:27from £16.20 to £31.40. The intention of the pilot scheme was to persuade more people to
00:34swap car journeys for rail travel and ultimately move closer to their green ambitions. While
00:39critics are calling this a hammer blow, Transport Secretary Fiona Hyslop said it primarily benefited
00:44those using trains and people on medium to higher incomes. As a result of this super
00:50off-peak tickets will be reintroduced on certain routes, as well as discounts for
00:54ScotRail season ticket holders.
