WATCH: Detective Inspector Jason Darcy talks about Operation Salus which targeted illegal use of trail bikes.
Transcript
00:00We just want to talk to you about today, over the last couple of months there have been
00:17incidents of unregistered trail bikes being ridden around Orange and as a result we initiated
00:25an operation called Operation Salus in partnership with the Orange Council and over the last
00:32two months we've had tremendous results. We've seen a decline in these incidents of trail
00:38bikes ridden across the town. We've managed to seize three unregistered trail bikes and
00:46we've issued four noise abatement directions on premises that we believe is where these
00:52motorbikes are being kept at and we've issued over half a dozen traffic information notices.
00:59That operation will continue as long as we still see trail bikes being ridden, unregistered
01:07across Orange but happy to say that there's been a dramatic decline of incidents around
01:13Orange at the moment.
01:15So the offenders that are getting caught, are they predominantly young people?
01:19Yeah, they're young people. This is only a small group of people, it's not an epidemic,
01:25it's only a core group of people which we've identified.
01:30How many people would make up this core group do you imagine?
01:34I'd say up to six to ten people.
01:40Are there any particular hot spots around town that you've identified that they like
01:44to ride their unregistered motorbikes in?
01:46Well I think the biggest hot spots are obviously Glenroy area and the Bowen area but we have
01:51seen incidents across over on the west as well.
01:54And what's stopping these offenders from re-offending? Are the punishments more severe if they get
02:00caught for a second, third, fourth time?
02:02Well the biggest, the most extreme thing is they risk having their bikes seized so that's
02:07the message we want to put out there. If you continue to do it, we'll come, we'll take
02:11your motorbike and remove all problems.
