00:00How have you seen Hollywood's interest in making those kinds of films change over the
00:04course of your career?
00:05And what do you think are the forces at play?
00:07Well, they just overthink it.
00:08Vince Vaughn is getting candid about why the type of R-rated movies he's been known for
00:13are no longer being made.
00:15The actor rose to fame in the late 90s and early 2000s with his hard R-rated movies such
00:20as Wedding Crashers, Old School and Swingers.
00:23But he recently shared on Hot Ones why he thinks those films are not being made in this
00:27day and age, saying movie execs are overthinking it.
00:30It gets crazy.
00:31You get these rules.
00:32It's like if you did geometry and you said 87 degrees was a right angle, then all your
00:38answers are messed up instead of 90 degrees.
00:40He noted, so there became some idea or concept like they would say something like, you have
00:44to have an IP.
00:45The star proceeded to use the board game Battleship as an example, saying the IP became a vehicle
00:50for storytelling just because it had a recognizable name.
00:54Whereas like an IP like John Hughes from our neck of the woods, right?
00:57An IP was a girl's turning 16, like every girl turns 16 or I'm going to cut school,
01:03you know, life situations or old school.
01:05What if I got to go back and, you know, be in a fraternity now at this stage of the game?
01:09He continued, they want to kind of follow a set of rules that somehow get set in stone
01:14that don't really translate.
01:15But as long as they follow them, they're not going to lose their jobs because they can
01:19say, well, look, I made a movie off the board game Payday.
01:22So even though the movie didn't work, you can't let me go, right?
01:25But the actor still has hope for the future and predicted that audiences would see more
01:29films similar to his R-rated comedies again.
01:32People want to laugh.
01:33People, people want to look at stuff that feels a little bit like it's, you know, dangerous
01:38or pushing the envelope.
01:39And I think you're going to see more of it in the film space sooner than later would
01:43be my guess.
