00:00The switch from a government-led 5G monopoly to a dual-network model may result in the

00:07creation of a profit-driven duopoly, disadvantaging consumers, says an economist.

00:13Goh Lim Thai of University Malaya said to ensure the viability of both networks, Digital

00:18Nasional Berhad would have to build additional infrastructure to enable spectrum sharing

00:23and maintain the 100 Mbps speed requirement.

00:27This, he said, would require substantial investment, which means telcos may raise prices

00:32to cover the costs.

00:33Meanwhile, the Federation of Malaysian Consumers Associations expressed concerns that the duopoly

00:39could also be anti-competitive, given that representatives from the second network developer

00:44are on the DNB board.

00:47Formca's CEO T. Saravanan said this would give them insider knowledge, with decisions

00:51possibly benefiting network providers over consumers.

00:56Goh also cautioned that the rollout of the second network could result in DNB's failure

01:01due to unfair competition, with potential losses ultimately borne by the public.
