00:00In Venezuela, the electoral silence is in place after the candidates closed their campaigns
00:16ahead of the presidential elections of next July 28th.
00:23On Friday, Cubans commemorate the 71st anniversary of the assault on the Moncada and Carlos Manuel
00:29de Céspedes barracks, also known as the Day of National Rebellion.
00:37And the opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games ended, marking a milestone for
00:42this type of event as the first to be held outside a stadium.
00:51Hello and welcome to From the South, I'm Alejandra GarcĂa from Telesur Studios in
00:55Havana, Cuba.
00:56We begin with the news.
01:09In Venezuela, the electoral ban came into force ahead of the July 28th elections, marking
01:14the closing of the presidential candidates' campaigns.
01:17In this context, authorities of the Ministry of Defense and Interior Relations, Justice
01:21and Peace, established a series of mandatory measures for compliance with the electoral
01:26exercise.
01:27The actions to be held starting on Friday include a dry law and the prohibition of
01:31carrying weapons, as well as celebrating political acts and gatherings, all implemented with
01:36the purpose of protecting the citizens.
01:39For their part, the National Electoral Council began the process to install the polling stations
01:44in 30,000 voting centers set up throughout the national territory.
01:52The National Electoral Council of Venezuela held a formal installation ceremony at the
01:57International Press Center of the National and International Monitoring Plan for the
02:012024 presidential election.
02:03During the meeting, the president of the National Electoral Council, Elvis Amoroso, highlighted
02:08the importance of the international observers for the presidential elections of next July
02:1328th.
02:14Likewise, Amoroso acknowledged the work of the international and national experts after
02:19accompanying the different audits of the electoral system in the phases prior to the event.
02:25The installation ceremony also included the participation of the former president of the
02:30Dominican Republic, Leonel Fernández, and the former president of Colombia, Ernesto
02:36Samper.
02:39In this context, Venezuelan authorities led a meeting with international accompaniers
02:43ahead of the 2024 presidential elections.
02:46More than 800 guests from more than 100 countries were present at the International Convention
02:52Center in La Carlota, Caracas.
02:54The meeting began with diverse cultural and musical activities, gastronomic samples and
02:58Venezuelan economic events.
03:00In this sense, the first vice president of the Socialist Party United for Venezuela,
03:06pointed out that the presence of the international accompaniers will guarantee the authentic
03:11account of the presidential elections.
03:15In all the electoral processes prior to this one, the world has also been worried about
03:24what is going to happen in Venezuela.
03:35Some give their prophecy and almost always roll with that prophecy.
03:39They talk about violence, they talk about fraud, they talk about low participation,
03:51each one makes their own story.
03:53The truth is that thanks to you who are here in the presence, you will have firsthand the
03:57authentic story of what is going to happen in Venezuela.
04:02Spanish journalist Ignacio Ramonet explained that the national dialogue called by President
04:06Nicolás Maduro on July 29th is a constitutional project with the people to carry out the future
04:11economic agreements and make peace without exclusivity.
04:18Now it can be confirmed, the president has information that we do not have, about what
04:23the opposition is preparing, whose violent coup trajectory we have known for many years.
04:30The second observation is what he has announced for the 29th, the day after what is supposed
04:35to be his victory, the victory of the president.
04:39He is calling for a great national dialogue without exclusives.
04:47It is also a way of saying that this has been a rhetorical battle, obviously it is an electoral
04:52campaign, there have been rhetorical confrontations, there have been differences, but the next
04:58day there will be national unification, national pacification.
05:03And there is a project that is a national project, there will be no foreign interference,
05:09he said, it is a national project, among Venezuelans, we are going to agree on which economic project,
05:16which cultural project, which social project, all kinds of projects, which ones we are going
05:22to have among ourselves.
05:24It is almost, I would say, almost a constitutional project, but in a different way, together
05:31with the people.
05:33Analyst Franco Villalma, member of the Mission Verdad team, affirmed that the Venezuelan
05:38electoral system has been the main point of attack by the Western powers to make the world
05:43believe that the country's democracy is weak in electoral aspects.
05:49If something has been unfairly attacked in Latin America it is the Venezuelan electoral
05:54system, sadly the main attacks have come from the Venezuelan opposition.
05:59We know that because of their agenda to create tension and sometimes destabilization, they
06:04need to attack the Venezuelan electoral system in order not to recognize their political
06:09failures in the elections where they have participated.
06:12But besides that, we know that the process of delegitimizing the Venezuelan institutions
06:17is one of the transversal processes that the Latin American far right has, it is a
06:22way to destroy or try to destroy, at least narratively, the Venezuelan process, due to
06:27its political particularities.
06:29That is to say, Venezuela has a system of parties and open elections, a system of direct
06:35and secret universal election where the parties and organizations and political actors participate
06:41in an open competitive field.
06:43To speak of a country that has a revolution but also has some characteristics of an electoral
06:48system similar to those of the liberal world, well, that has to be the target of attack,
06:53that is to say, to declare that Venezuelan democracy is weak in the electoral field.

07:15Cuba celebrates the day of national rebellion which commemorates the assault on the Bancada
07:20and Carlos Maléndez Pérez barracks 71 years ago.
07:23From Sancti EspĂritus, Fabiola LĂłpez gives us more details.
07:30Hello, how are you?
07:32A pleasure to greet you from the central province of Sancti EspĂritus, about 350 kilometers
07:38from Havana.
07:39Indeed, July 26 are very special days for Cubans, precisely on this day when 71 years
07:45of the assaults on the Bancada and Carlos Manuel de Céspedes barracks are commemorated,
07:50President Miguel DĂaz-Canel, in his profile on the social network X, congratulated the
07:55population of the central province of Sancti EspĂritus, which has been the deserving host
07:59of the Central Act for the National Rebellion Day.
08:02In his X account, the president highlighted the nobility and industriousness of the people
08:07of EspĂritu and said that together with RaĂşl and other heroes of the centenary generation,
08:12the most joyful dawn of the year was experienced this Friday in Sancti EspĂritus.
08:16Precisely, Army General RaĂşl Castro and President Miguel DĂaz-Canel led here in Sancti EspĂritus
08:22the Central Act for the National Rebellion Day.
08:25The event took place at the Major General Serafín Sánchez, Revolution Square and was
08:30attended by some 5,000 people from Sancti EspĂritus representing all Cubans.
08:35At the end of the celebration, which combined culture, art, history and a lot of commitment,
08:41Cuban Vice President Salvador Valdés Mesa expressed the country's will to face the
08:45economic challenges and promote its independent development.
08:48Delivering the central words of the activity, Salvador Valdés Mesa reaffirmed the will
08:53to defend the Cuban Revolution in the face of the aggressiveness of the United States.
08:57During the commemoration, he spoke of the need for unity, relevance, creative resistance,
09:03of not standing idly by waiting for the blockade to be lifted and of the need to correct distortions
09:08in order to give new impetus to the economy.
09:10This year, together with the people of Sancti EspĂritus, around 140 friends of Cuba from
09:16more than 24 countries participated in the celebration, including a delegation from Vietnam,
09:21as well as members of the European José Martí Brigade of Volunteer Work and Solidarity with
09:26Cuba, the Juan RĂos Rivera Brigade from Puerto Rico, a delegation of Cuban-Americans from
09:32the José Martí Cultural Society, an Afro-American group of solidarity with the island and foreign
09:37students recently graduated from the University of Medical Sciences here in the city.
09:42This is the third time that the Moncada commemoration ceremony is held in the land of Major General
09:47Serafín Sánchez, who is a hero of the three wars of independence of this country, a friend
09:52of José Martí.
09:56On Thursday in the United States, the Vice President of the Nation Kamala Harris after
10:00a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stressed that there is a hopeful
10:05movement to achieve a peace agreement in Gaza.
10:09So I just had a frank and constructive meeting with Prime Minister Netanyahu.
10:13I told him that I will always ensure that Israel is able to defend itself, including
10:19from Iran and Iran-backed militias such as Hamas and Hezbollah.
10:26Let us all do what we can to prevent the suffering of innocent civilians.
10:31And let us condemn anti-Semitism, Islamophobia, and hate of any kind.
10:40And let us work to unite our country.
10:43I thank you.
10:46Meanwhile, demonstrators in the United States gathered near the White House to reject the
10:57compromise between Joe Biden's government and Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu
11:02and demand an end to the Israeli occupation army's genocide war against the Palestinian
11:08people in the Gaza Strip.
11:09It is worth noting that mobilizations nationwide reject the Israeli Prime Minister's visit
11:15to the United States, in addition to demand the arrest of Netanyahu for committing war
11:19crimes while denouncing the U.S. government's supply of arms to the Tel Aviv regime.
11:30In Palestine, displaced citizens in central Gaza Strip expressed anger and surprise on
11:35Thursday over Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's speech to the U.S. Congress where
11:40he used the high-profile address to emphasize longstanding and close ties between the United
11:45States and Israel.
11:49Interviewed civilians in Palestine said that they were expecting Netanyahu to declare a
11:53ceasefire, but on the contrary, he vowed to continue the war in the Gaza Strip, stating
11:58his willingness to achieve total victory against Hamas.
12:03He did not mention ceasefire or anything.
12:05He wants to continue with what he's doing to kill and destroy the Palestinian people.
12:10He wants to wipe out resistance, but he cannot do that, so he's wiping out the Palestinian
12:15people.
12:17Citizens also expected a truce to be achieved, but Netanyahu has been avoiding it, claiming
12:22he will have victory all over Gaza.
12:27Regarding Netanyahu's speech, we were expecting that there will be a truce.
12:32This is our only hope during this period, but we were severely shocked.
12:36He used to bombard civilians and he used to bombard pregnant women.
12:39He used to demolish homes on the heads of their inhabitants, the shells and missiles
12:44that he hits us with, as if they are hitting mountains and rocks and not human beings.
12:51Netanyahu's visits to the United States have been severely criticized by Israeli citizens,
12:55Palestinian citizens, and even citizens in the United States, where several activists
13:00were detained for staging a protest in the capital.
13:04On Friday, in Palestine, the Ministry of Health in Gaza reported that the death toll reached
13:0839,000 martyrs in 294 days of Israeli genocide.
13:13In this regard, they also denounced that during the last 24 hours, the people of Gaza were
13:17victims of new attacks in civilian areas in several regions of the Strip, while the search
13:22and rescue teams continue to recover bodies from under the rubble and attend to the wounded.
13:28For his part, the Gaza Health Ministry also confirmed that in addition to the 39,175 killed
13:35by the Tel Aviv regime, the number of wounded reached 90,403 people.

14:00Final short break, don't go away.
14:02Welcome back to From the South.
14:26In the United States, the forest fire in the Butter County Forest in Northern California
14:31tripled in magnitude, destroying more than 250 miles of forest.
14:36Investigations by local authorities revealed that a man pushed his car down a cliff in
14:40Beedwell Park, causing the flames to spread and increasing the damage to the area.
14:46They also assured that the subject was arrested without the right to bail until the formal
14:50accusation hearing is scheduled for July 29th.
14:54In the meantime, the evacuation of 4,000 residents near the areas affected by the fire was ordered,
15:00while the fire department continues working to put out the fire.
15:08More than 20 people died in Morocco during the last 24 hours due to the extreme heat
15:12wave that has hit the country.
15:15The General Meteorological Department predicted the increase in temperatures in several regions
15:20of the North African country, which could exceed 40 degrees Celsius.
15:24Authorities said that most of the dead were elderly or suffering from chronic diseases.
15:30They also urged citizens to stay hydrated and avoid going outdoors.
15:34The rising temperatures and prolonged drought have lowered reservoir levels, threatening
15:39the vital farming sector.
15:41It has previously predicted that daily records would be broken this summer in the Northern
15:46Hemisphere as a result of climate change.
15:53In Mongolia, herders and local non-governmental eco-sum urge companies and the population
15:59to combat plastic pollution.
16:01According to a global predictment, the annual production of plastic worldwide is 460 million
16:07tons and by 2064, the figure is expected to triple if governments don't take measures
16:12to curb it.
16:13Since 2018, local non-governmental organization Eco-Sum has arranged a top recycling facility
16:20to encourage citizens to bring local waste to the entity for processing.
16:24However, a nearby field in the Kishig-Undur district is polluted with a mountain of plastic
16:31waste just a few meters away from where the horses graze.
16:35In this context, a herder and a non-governmental organization coordinator shared their views
16:40on the matter.
16:46On Thursday, during a speech in the framework of the first anniversary in power of the current
16:51Niger administration, the country's military chief General Abdo Ramhamane Tiani stated
16:57that the nation is marching towards full sovereignty.
17:01No state, no interstate organization will dictate to us how to behave, nor its agenda
17:09in terms of strategic or diplomatic partnerships.
17:12And those who fantasize about the imminent return to power of regimes that have fallen
17:16under their sway are in for a rude awakening.
17:19Before it's too late, they'll have to face the facts.
17:22Our march towards full sovereignty is inexorable.
17:26On Friday, France suffered a massive attack on its high-speed rail network just hours
17:30before the start of the Olympic Games.
17:32In this regard, the National Association of French Railways warned that the disruption
17:37will have a serious impact on all travelers in the country, as local authorities reported
17:42that the heart of the network was hit, and pointed out that in particular the connections
17:47between Paris and the western, northern and eastern regions will be affected.
17:51As a consequence, the French railway company is out of air and reportedly working against
17:56the clock to restore service as soon as possible and ensure the safety of passengers.
18:07A new transport and traffic plan will be presented early this afternoon.
18:11The National Association of French Railways is committed to communicating with passengers
18:15directly, in a targeted way, about the new solutions and alternatives that will be offered
18:20to them, and everyone is on deck for this.
18:25The investigation is starting, I call on everyone to be cautious.
18:29What we know, what we can see, is that this operation was prepared, coordinated, that
18:34sensitive points were targeted, which shows some form of knowledge of the network to know
18:38where to strike.
18:53Thousands of Olympic competitors cruised down the River Seine in a spectacular opening ceremony
19:00for the Paris Games on Friday that celebrated French history and culture to the delight
19:05of a crowd undeterred by persistent rain.
19:08For the first time in Olympic history, the opening ceremony took place outside the main
19:13stadium with up to 7,000 athletes parading down the Seine, past the historic monuments
19:19of the French capital.
19:21In an ambitious high-risk departure from past opening ceremonies, the athletes sailed in
19:26an armada of 85 boats instead of making the traditional walk around and running tracks.
19:33Some 300,000 people watched in person from specially built stands on the riverbanks,
19:39and another 200,000 from overlooking balconies and apartments.
