00:00Kids can get themselves into a lot of sticky situations, but experts say some of their
00:04activities are inherently more dangerous than others.
00:07Dr. Dan Park tells HuffPost there are many obvious culprits of childhood injuries,
00:11namely things that involve high places or high speeds.
00:14Park points to things like the monkey bars and trampolines as the biggest threats,
00:18explaining, quote, being thrown very high into the air at very high speeds,
00:21and often at awkward angles, can lead to musculoskeletal injuries,
00:25like fractures to the elbows and legs.
00:28With Dr. Christopher Kelly adding that a common injury with regards to monkey bars
00:32are supracondylar fractures to the elbow, which need surgery and orthopedic pinning.
00:36However, a less obvious cause of injury is hot surfaces.
00:39Burns related to the sun heating metal surfaces that are meant to be played on can be serious,
00:44especially if children are barefoot.
00:45So what's the most dangerous thing for kids?
00:47Well, anything that involves pools.
00:49According to the CDC, backyard swimming pools, even shallow ones, can be killers.
00:54They say pools are the leading cause of death in kids aged 1 to 4,
00:58and the second for those aged 5 to 14.
01:00With the CDC reporting, on average, 4,012 drownings have occurred each year from 2011 to 2020.
