Cardboard boat race is always an absolute highlight every year, you know it's difficult to know how
00:05
many people take part but this year for me the highlight was the banana, no what was it called,
00:11
I've forgotten it now, the banana algalum split and it was incredible because literally they
00:16
were dressed up as ice creams and they sunk. I've just been part of a team that took part in the
00:21
cardboard boat race. The cardboard boat race has been running for quite a long time I assume
00:26
and the deal is you have to make a boat out fully out of cardboard, you can paint it and you can
00:30
varnish it and you can use glue and tape but no regular boat building materials and what you have
00:36
to do is launch the boat, get in the boat, paddle around the buoy and make it back to the other
00:41
lot. The winner this year, Darius, he's taken part, it's a bit of a family affair, his dad was in the
00:48
wheel and his dad really had struggled, he couldn't get the boat launched and then Darius literally
00:54
had a little boat and he was rowing along and he went up and around the buoy, came back to the
00:59
pontoon and was a clear winner this year and beat his father for the first time. He'd been taking
01:05
part in the cardboard boat race for the last 10 years since he was eight years old with his
01:09
grandmother who used to take part in it as well so nice to see it being kept in the family and
01:14
Darius was the winner against his dad, the wheel, he didn't even get off the pontoon but sank in style.
01:20
We made a quite ridiculous boat and we initially planned to have six people in it, it became
01:26
apparent immediately that only four people were going to fit in the boat and it came apart inside
01:32
about 30 seconds. You know it is part of Bristol, it's been running for so long, it's free and it is
01:38
for all the family. Last year was actually the most diverse festival that they've ever had and
01:44
they have made, we've got some wonderful new curators and organisers, swan events and proud
01:49
events and you know in combination and collaboration with Bristol City Council
01:53
have ensured to make sure this is representing those voices that sometimes don't get represented.
