Mary's Milk Bar in Edinburgh named the most popular ice cream shop in the UK

Mary’s Milk Bar in Edinburgh was recently found to be the best place for ice cream in the UK - so we took a stroll down to the Grassmarket to try it for ourselves.

00:00My daughter suggested this place, Mary's Milk Bar, so we waited in line for about 20 minutes

00:26and not bad stuff, worth the wait.

00:29Yeah, oh yeah.

00:30The ice cream's great, we saw it online on Instagram.

00:33Rhea spotted it and we thought we'd try some of the fried banana ice cream which didn't

00:38have any today, so pistachio.

00:48There's someone that's staying here all the time, so we've got the milk ice cream,

00:51the salted caramel ice cream and the dark chocolate.

00:55Everything else changes every day, so there's always like a vegan, maybe two or three vegan

01:00options and there's always like a nut flavour, but essentially everything changes every day.

01:05Especially at this time of year where it's busy, the flavours will change throughout

01:09the day, so you don't know what you're going to get when you're queuing up.

01:12Sometimes the flavours will change in the space of you queuing up in the queue.

01:16What have you gone for today?

01:18The cherry cream and just regular milk.

01:22How was that?

01:23It was delicious, especially with the real cherry bits in it.

01:28I've got coconut and coffee and pistachio, it's amazing.

01:33I've got her classic milk and pistachio as well.

01:44It's lovely to hear, but also very, very terrifying.

01:49Obviously, I just make ice cream for my own pleasure, you know, and if someone likes it,

01:54that's very nice.

01:56But yeah, I find all this kind of thing, surveys I think, also daunting.

02:02I just make what I want, yeah, and I hope that someone will like it, even if it's my

02:07own queueing up, it's a bit more unusual.

02:10So, lovely news, but also very daunting.

02:14We were on a trip to Edinburgh, so I went on TikTok naturally and looked through whatever

02:18was recommended, and this was one of the many places that kind of popped up on my feed,

02:22had a lot of reviews, and as we were walking by there was a huge line, so it has to be

02:26good, so we decided to stop, so that's why we're here.

02:29Lovely regulars, they will look after me and look after myself, but it is quite daunting

02:34when I do things that they've never been here before and they don't know what to expect,

02:38so I just make things my own mind and try not to get influenced by anyone else.

02:45But yeah, it's a lot of expectation.

02:47I know when I started it was three years of no one coming in, and it was just me.

02:53So after maybe three, four years, people, word of mouth essentially, in Edinburgh is

02:58a big deal, and then 11 years on we've got this ridiculous queue, like a lot of people

03:03waiting to come in.
