In this episode we try out the Flight of the Swallows event, where I take the P-51D-5 on a mission to protect Allied bombers on the way to bomb an enemy airfield. Unfortunately we are facing enemy jets and as a result end up with mixed results.

00:00Hello everybody, and welcome back to another episode of War Thunder.
00:03As you can see here, I'm flying the P-51, um, the P-51D5, um, to be precise, in a realistic battle.
00:11Now, this is, um, part of the event we did yesterday, the, um, I can't remember the name of it, but you have to, um, escort a load of bombers to a German airfield.
00:20Because that's where, uh, their German jets are based.
00:24But, obviously, the Germans don't want this to happen, so they send up a bunch of jets to shoot down the B-17s.
00:30And you've got to defend them, basically.
00:32So, pretty fun game, um, it's my first time taking part in it, because I didn't have the, the only planes that could take part are the P-51D5E30 and the ME-262s.
00:44Although there are a few AI Bf-109s, and you can get that involved right at the end.
00:49So, at the moment, I'm just flying near the bombers, trying to get some height, because, obviously, Germans are going to be going extremely fast.
00:57Um, obviously, we're in piston planes, they're in jets, and we've just spotted the first ones.
01:03Now, I did three games of the event, um, one we won, well, this one we won, you know, hands down.
01:12Second one, and third one, we lost very badly.
01:15Um, the third one I won't be showing properly, because there was a bit of a glitch with the plane.
01:21Every, I didn't take any damage, but every time I tried to turn, it would just flip over upside down and try and dive into the ground, which, um, can't really explain.
01:30But, um, anyway, we were going after the ME-262s, um, one's already been shot down.
01:37Which, um, will probably set the tone for the rest of this match, really.
01:42Apologies if it's, um, gone a bit laggy.
01:44If you look at the frames per second, I've actually managed to get it up to a decent rate for once.
01:48Um, got a hit on the jet.
01:50I think, I did shoot down one in this game, um, my first jet kill ever, actually, um, which, you know, I was quite proud of that.
01:57Um, just trying to get this one.
02:03It just, I don't know why it keeps, like, stuttering every now and then.
02:08I didn't really realise it during the game, but, watching it now.
02:13Now, going after, I think this may be the one I shot down, I can't quite remember.
02:18Um, I'm getting some hits on them.
02:21Which is good, because remember, it's realistic, they don't have time to repair all the arms, so, every bullet into them now, you know, makes them worse.
02:28You know, less likely to be ever created in the future.
02:31Critical hit, set him on fire.
02:33He's tumbling in the air.
02:35He's got two fires, so, you know, even worse.
02:37He's been riddled with bullets.
02:39Damaged his fuselage.
02:41And aircraft destroyed, my first ever jet kill, I believe.
02:45That was actually my only kill for the match, unfortunately.
02:49Um, we're just going to watch a bit more of the match.
02:52Um, may have to speed it up a part, because obviously we don't want it to get too boring.
02:57Now, um, in real life, the main, um, you know, giving a little bit of a history lesson.
03:01The, um, the main threat to the German jets was being destroyed on the ground.
03:06Um, as you can see here, they are, while we're dealing with them quite effectively, they are a lot faster than us.
03:11Um, you'll see, especially at the end of this game, in the next game where we lost.
03:16The Germans can just boom and zoom, and we cannot do anything about it.
03:20We've just seen a B-17 critically damaged, another one set on fire, and then destroyed.
03:26But, you know, and the jets have both escaped.
03:29Um, well one's on fire, or smoke, well he's got some damage, and the other one's two kilometers away already.
03:35Um, so, what tended to happen was the, well, the bombing raids on the airfields like this.
03:41But also the, when the German jets went to land.
03:45Obviously they had to be quite slow, quite low to the ground.
03:48And, obviously that made them quite easy prey for the P-51s and Hawker Tempests and Spitfires.
03:55You know, all the other Allied aircraft.
03:57Um, and a lot, well a lot of the time they didn't even get in the air.
04:01Because of the fuel shortages towards the end of the war, a lot of them were just left on the airfields.
04:07Just, you know, rusting away.
04:09Because, well maybe not rusting away, but just because of the lack of fuel, a lot of them couldn't be used.
04:14Or couldn't be used very often.
04:16Which again, you know, on the ground at their most vulnerable.
04:20I'm sure a lot of them were destroyed in these bombing raids.
04:23You know, prevented from flying because of the fuel being destroyed.
04:28Just saw a Bf 109G there.
04:30And one of the tactics they did use to stop them from being destroyed on the ground, as we can see here, was other fighters and a lot of Flak guns.
04:39Because obviously, if they're low down, then, and, you know, the P-51s and other aircraft would come low down to get them.
04:47Obviously they were a bit of an easier target for Flak.
04:50I'm not sure how well that actually worked out, but, you know, it was one way of deterring Allied pilots, I suppose.
05:01Trying to get this Bf 109G6 now.
05:04I do apologise for the stuttering, I didn't actually notice any of it during the game.
05:09I thought this was probably one of my best framerate checks.
05:13I actually managed to get it into the 30s or 40s I think at some points.
05:18Now, just got another Me 262, and again another Bf 17.
05:23We started with, I think, 20, we're down to 11.
05:25And I'm not sure, I think one of them might be the one that's on fire, so, you know.
05:30We're doing okay, I think.
05:33Well, we've lost half, we're not actually doing that good, I suppose.
05:36We've killed most of the enemy though.
05:38I think you need four to get the enemy base.
05:41I know we, in one of the games, we had two get there, and we took it down to about half.
05:46Someone else told us as well it was about four.
05:50And another Bf 17 gone.
05:52Now, I think at this point, I think there's only one or two left.
05:57Now, I'm going to skip forward for a lot of this, because at this point in the game we were just literally chasing one jet.
06:04You'll see what I mean in a sec.
06:07Now, I'm going to speed it up a little bit at this point, because by now we are just chasing one or two jets.
06:13There was a bit of a glitch, there was only, I think, one or two jets left.
06:18One we were chasing, the other one was somewhere else.
06:21But as I'm saying in chat now, one of the Bf 17s got set on fire somehow.
06:25I don't know if it was Flak or Bf 109, but at the time I felt it was...
06:32I'm trying to think of the right word.
06:36It's sufficiently odd to bring up the point.
06:39I've started to dive on this jet, but as you can see, they're just too fast.
06:44I'm trying to fire in front, because, you know, it's the last jet.
06:47It's not like I'm going to need all 400 bullets, but it's just too fast.
06:52I think we're quite near the end of the game.
06:55I'm pretty sure we do just chase him for the rest of this game, so I'm going to speed it up again from here.
07:01So, we're just trying to chase him down.
07:03I'll stop it about where the base went down.
07:07Now, as you can see, it actually takes a long time for the ticket to go down.
07:12So, you could theoretically have your four bombers drop the bombs,
07:18destroy the base, and then have the Me 262s come back and destroy the bombers,
07:22especially if they're already damaged or something.
07:25So, I haven't seen that happen, thankfully for us, but...
07:30I suppose I'm interested if that would actually work.
07:35So, at this point, again, we're just chasing the German jet.
07:39This sort of shows how fast they are, but I think practically the entire team is chasing after them.
07:45You know, probably with various different modifications and fuel loads and, you know...
07:50None of us can catch him.
07:52Mine's an extremely unmodified P-51.
07:56I think it's got the radiator and, I think, tracer bullets, and that's it.
08:01So, it was kind of pointless at this point, anyway, because we'd already won the match.
08:06Did go for one quick fly under the bridge.
08:09We're in this part of the fight.
08:11Well, I'll stop recording this match, because, you know...
08:15Nothing else happens here.
08:17Quickly go to the leaderboard.
08:19I actually came second for that one kill, probably because of all the hits I kept getting, though.
08:23It was a double bonus, so 4,668 points,
08:2820,000 lions, came second on the team, like I said.
08:32So, you know, someone got three kills, which I was quite surprised about.
08:37I don't know if it counts AI, I'm pretty sure it doesn't.
08:41But I got eight hits and one critical hit.
08:44Would I have ever seen the critical was on the one I shot down?
08:48And, yeah, so...
08:51Got those points, and decided to invest in the...
08:56Well, I bought some... I started researching rockets.
08:59I actually thought I had more research points left for some reason at this point.
09:02Got the fuselage repair, which I thought would help with max repair when I was diving a few times.
09:07I mean, max speed, sorry.
09:09When I was diving a few times, I did get a...
09:12You know, you're approaching the speed limit.
09:14So, you know, I thought it might help a little bit, adding a few miles an hour on.
09:18Now, this is the second match, which we...
09:21We were obliterated.
09:23I don't think... Well, sort of the bombers were obliterated.
09:26We weren't really damaged or destroyed ourselves in the P-51s.
09:31I did the same thing, you know.
09:33Up high, waiting for the German jets.
09:36And we've just seen the first German jet.
09:38I've got a fuselage repair, so I can do diving a little bit better.
09:41You know, I can go slightly faster before breaking up, I'm pretty sure.
09:46Should help with speed as well.
09:48Maybe maneuverability.
09:50You know, it should be a pretty good advantage for...
09:53Well, that's what I thought, anyway.
09:56We've already got one jet being chased down.
09:59Another one's already gone into the bomber stream.
10:01We've lost one bomber already, off the bat.
10:03Don't know where the rest of them are at the moment.
10:08The base actually looks really near, but it takes a hell of a long time for the bombers to get there.
10:13Unless I'm mistaken, these are also the E-bombers, the B-17Es.
10:17Which, um...
10:18Not sure if they would have been using them in late 1944.
10:21I'm pretty sure this is described as about the time of the Battle of the Bulge.
10:24If they had the Gs, they might have a slightly better chance, because you'd have the chin turret.
10:29But you keep the other machine guns in the nose as well.
10:32So you would get the addition of two extra machine guns.
10:36And, you know, that would generally help out quite a lot.
10:39Although, you know, bombers are already quite accurate with their machine guns.
10:44Not as accurate as they used to be.
10:46It seems to be the AI bombers doing really good in this.
10:49My own AI gunners are useless.
10:51But, back to the match.
10:53Chasing after an ME-262, and...
10:56You know, I just can't hit them.
10:57And this is basically what's going to happen for the rest of the game.
11:00I might get the odd hit, but they're just too fast for me.
11:04You know, I can't get any damage onto them.
11:07And it was like that for the rest of the team.
11:10I don't think we...
11:11You know, there was quite a few bomber jets left at the end of the game, if I'm remembering right.
11:16I got one hit, didn't set them on fire, which was what I was hoping to do.
11:21Now, I also broke my own rule, really, by chasing them.
11:25Well, I didn't really have a rule on it.
11:27I never got a chance to chase them properly in the last game.
11:31I got another hit, so I did think, oh, this might turn out kind of well.
11:35Because I got Tracer, so...
11:37You know, a slight chance of setting them on fire.
11:40And obviously, if they're on fire, I can just fly off into the air and hopefully burn them.
11:45You know, burn and crash.
11:47Or they'll be sufficiently damaged that I won't have to deal with them.
11:52But anyway, at this point I did realise, you know, I'm not going to catch him.
11:56So I went back to the main battle, and there are one, two, three...
11:59I think I caught five jets or so, and they're just running rampant.
12:04We can't stop them.
12:07We're down to 17 jets.
12:09Um, bombers. I keep getting them mixed up.
12:12So, we're actually doing better at defending the bombers at this point in the match.
12:16Um, Bf109s have turned up.
12:18Or at least one of them.
12:21So, that's going to make things even more difficult.
12:25We've just lost loads of B-17s all at once, all of a sudden.
12:28We've gone down to 14.
12:30And we need four, and we've lost nearly half.
12:33Now, again, we lost half last time, but...
12:36Last time we dealt with most of the jets by then.
12:39There is loads of jets here still.
12:43And I'm just not manoeuvrable enough to get a lead on most of them.
12:48And you can watch him going in for another run.
12:51On 13 bombers now.
12:53See if he gets any in this run.
12:55There's three or four just swarming the bombers now.
12:58Twelve of the... there's 12 bombers left.
13:01Remember the Me 262s get 30mm cannons, so...
13:05That does explain a lot of their...
13:07You know, they're good for taking out bombers, and...
13:11You know, they could easily take out our fighters as well.
13:14So we're down to 11 bombers already.
13:17I think one, possibly...
13:19That falling one may not actually be dead.
13:21There's a bit of a glitch where, like...
13:23It'll be shot down and crashing, but because the pilot's alive or whatever...
13:26It doesn't count as dead.
13:28So we're down to 10, so we've lost exactly half now.
13:32I did try to go and engage this 109, but...
13:34I think someone else got it, but...
13:36Or I went to and sort of catch up with the bombers and...
13:39Provide a bit of a deterrent for the, um...
13:42Towards the jets.
13:44You know, make them think twice, maybe.
13:47Suffice to say, this doesn't really seem to have worked.
13:50There's already one below me.
13:52I don't know how I didn't notice them in the first place.
13:54And I just cannot get a shot on them.
13:56Now we're down to 7 bombers.
13:58I really should have been more aware of that jet fighter, really.
14:02There's another one coming. I'm trying to get into a position where I can...
14:05You know, fire bullets in front of it, get hit, maybe set him on fire.
14:08But again, I just can't do it, and...
14:12You know, bombers are just going left and right.
14:14I was actually going to skip a lot of this match.
14:17But I just wanted to leave this bit in, specifically.
14:20To just show how lethal they can be against the bombers.
14:23I mean, they're just one pass in them.
14:25You know, one pass in shooting the bombers down or severely damaging them.
14:29To the point where they can't really be much use.
14:33We're down to 6 bombers. We need 4.
14:35This is where I realised they're the E versions.
14:37Well, they have the camera of the E versions.
14:39I don't see a chin... I don't see the turret.
14:41The chin turret, no.
14:44So I'm pretty sure they are E's.
14:48Which also means they only carry 6,000 pound of bombs.
14:51If they had the G's, they could have carried 8,000 pounds.
14:55So we could have possibly got away with maybe...
14:58You know, 3 bombers or something like that.
15:01But actually, just looking at the time, there's not really much point to skipping forward.
15:04There's only about a minute left.
15:07So...
15:09Really, we were completely annihilated in this match.
15:12Or the bombers were.
15:13We're down to 4 and we need 4, so...
15:16And I think that one Tumbling is still alive, so...
15:19He's not going to get to the target, obviously.
15:22So...
15:23My thoughts on the Swallow event.
15:25I actually really like it.
15:27It is nice that the Germans do get a sort of historical match-up.
15:30Because at the moment...
15:32Now, I haven't got jets, but...
15:34I have heard a lot about German jets facing MiGs and Sabres and all that sort of stuff.
15:39Which, you know, is rather unfair.
15:42MiGs and Sabres are late 40's, early 50's aircrafts that fought over a career.
15:48The Me 262 is an aircraft that was in development...
15:51You know, I think like 1943-44 it had its first flight.
15:56And it was, you know, 44-45 when it was fighting, so...
16:00You know, it's extremely unfair.
16:02The only advantage it really has is...
16:04Well, it's burst mass.
16:06Which is like basically how much kilograms of fire it can get out in one second.
16:11It's one second burst mass, I think it's called.
16:14Which is at like 14 kilograms.
16:16But even then, the MiGs and some of the...
16:18I think the cannon Sabres and the top MiGs have like a burst mass of 10 kilograms, so...
16:25It's not that much difference.
16:28You know, the only advantage it really has is its firepower.
16:31So it is nice it can go against some of the aircraft it historically went against.
16:37And a lot of people say, oh...
16:39A lot of people complain saying, oh...
16:41You don't want to have the Me 262s going against their proper opponents, because...
16:46They'd be outnumbered like 2-1 or something, but...
16:49Here we was outnumbered 2-1, and we...
16:51You know, we lost badly.
16:54Admittedly, we won in the other match, but...
16:57I think that was because the other team was probably a little inexperienced and unlucky.
17:01Now, this was for my third match.
17:03This is the thing that kept happening.
17:06It just kept...
17:07Every time I tried to turn, it kept trying to go upside down and dive into the ground.
17:11I still have no idea what the hell that was about, but...
17:14The game was basically unplayable.
17:16I just couldn't turn or do anything.
17:18Because...
17:19It kept trying to roll over onto its back, and I had to use all my power to stop that.
