With the "Tusk Force" Dev Server now open its time to kick off our look at the new vehicles, starting with the T58, a prototype heavy tank with a unique oscillating turret and effective autoloader!

Unfortunatelty this rather effective tank is being added as a premium tank with a rather hefty price tag, but is it worth the cost? Find out in this video!

00:00Hello everybody, and today we've got our first look at the Tusk Force dev server.
00:05So we're going to start off by looking at a new American premium tank, the T-58,
00:10which is going to be coming to the American tech tree at battle rating 8.0 rank 5.
00:15Now unfortunately this is a premium tank, or in fact it's a pack vehicle,
00:19so this is going to set you back £40 or your national currency equivalent.
00:24So yeah, this is quite an expensive tank to get,
00:26and it is unfortunate that it's a premium vehicle and not in the tech tree,
00:30because this would have been a rather interesting tank to have available for regular players.
00:35And one of the first things you might notice is the tank looks rather odd,
00:39at least around the turret, and that's because this is actually an oscillating design.
00:44So much like the French tanks, instead of the gun moving within the turret when you want to aim up or down,
00:50the entire turret sort of pivots with the gun, which gives it this rather unusual look.
00:57And then looking at the rest of the gun stats, it's reloaded by an autoloader,
01:01so it's got 3.8 second reload rate, and you've got six shells in this sort of revolver ammo rack at the back here.
01:08So you can get off quite a few shells in quite a short amount of time,
01:12and you can see you've got a depression of minus 8 and an elevation of plus 12,
01:1612.6 degrees a second horizontal turning speed, and 2.8 degrees in the vertical.
01:22And then looking at the ammunition types, you've only got two,
01:24so you've got your heat shell, which has a pretty good performance,
01:27406mm penetration, 826m a second muzzle velocity.
01:33But as you can see, the muzzle velocity is absolutely awful.
01:37It's only 259m a second, so long-range shooting with the Heschel is going to be very difficult anyway.
01:45It's only really going to be useful for very close-in encounters,
01:48but you might find it useful in some situations where you might, in theory, use HE shells.
01:54And then on top of that, you've got your .50 cal on the roof,
01:57and for your coaxial position, you've got your 7.62mm machine gun.
02:01And then moving on to armor, we'll start off with the hull,
02:04which is the same one that would later be used for the M103 heavy tank.
02:08So this should perform fairly similarly to that.
02:11And it looks like it will decently protect you against most conventional shells.
02:16Heat shells will obviously go straight through that,
02:19which is just an unfortunate situation.
02:22And then moving on to the turret, it's in theory only 90mm,
02:25but because it is at quite a bit of an angle in quite a few places,
02:29that protection is a lot better than it actually looks like in pure thickness.
02:34So yeah, like around here, it's about 200mm effective thickness,
02:38going up to nearly 300mm for here.
02:42And then for the sides of the tank, you do have this cradle,
02:44which is an additional 90mm,
02:46which does provide some protection to the flanks of the tank.
02:49And there is this sort of weak spot here underneath the gun.
02:52In theory, you could depress the gun to cover that spot.
02:55That seems like a fairly drastic solution to fixing that problem.
02:59And the roof armor, unfortunately, well, it's 90mm for some areas.
03:03Other areas are only 25.4mm.
03:06And the engine deck is also not particularly well armored.
03:09Then moving on to the crew, you've got four crews.
03:11You've got your driver down here, and then your three other crewmen up in the turret.
03:15The commander can also find a main armament, which is pretty good.
03:18And he's got optics with 10x zoom, while the gunner's got 6x to 7.5x zoom.
03:25And then lastly, you've got your engine.
03:28So 810 horsepower for a top speed of 21.8mph going forward on six gears,
03:33but a reverse speed of only 4.2mph on two gears.
03:37So that could be a bit of a problem when trying to escape ambushes.
03:40And yeah, definitely not the fastest tank in the world at any rate.
03:44So we're going to quickly take this out for a test drive, just to see how it performs.
03:49So here is the T-58, and I'll just show off the oscillating turret.
03:53So you can see there, by aiming the turret down, it's pivoted to cover that weak spot.
03:58And then by aiming upwards, the entire turret pivots again and creates an even bigger weak spot.
04:03But yeah, you can see basically how the oscillating turret works.
04:07I'm going to test out the heat shell and show the autoloader in action.
04:11So you can see we're almost ready for our next shell already.
04:16And we've now switched to the Hesh shell, and you can see from the range indicators,
04:20this is going to be a lot harder to actually aim compared to the heat shell.
04:25And you can also see that the Hesh shell is not necessarily performing the best compared to the heat shell.
04:32I mean, that's quite a few direct hits there.
04:34Yeah, you can see why some people don't necessarily like the Hesh shell very much.
04:42I'll take a quick shot at that T-54 with this.
04:45And then going back to the heat shell, yeah, it's just far easier to aim with that, to be honest.
04:51Now, here's the driver's view, and we're just going to drive forward just to see how it performs mobility-wise.
04:57You can see it's not the fastest tank in the world.
04:59We've nearly reached our top speed already, and we've not even reached the bridge yet.
05:06Oh, still going.
05:08And the roof-mounted machine gun seems to be a bit glitched at the moment.
05:12Like, it fires one... well, it does fire constantly, but it only actually shows one bullet being fired,
05:18whereas the coaxial, you know, shows continuous fire.
05:21And braking... brakes pretty quickly, and you can see the reverse speed is not the best in the world.
05:31And show off a full turret traverse, or at least a half turret traverse.
05:34Not the fastest turning in the world, but not the worst either.
05:38I mean, it's not like a Panther tank or any... or M10.
05:41They're really not very fast-turning tanks turret-wise.
05:46And you can see it's taken all that time for our next shell to be loaded.
05:51Into the ammo rack.
05:54And so, yeah, this does seem like it's going to perform decently well, at least offensively.
05:59It is a bit on the slow side, and against Heatshell, that armor is not going to do very well.
06:04Against more conventional shells, it will do decently enough, I would think.
06:09The flanks might be a bit vulnerable, but from the front, it should be decently well-protected from more conventional shells.
06:15And so, that is the T-58.
06:18And, yeah, unfortunately, it is a pack vehicle, like I said.
06:23And I could see this being quite a popular vehicle.
06:25I could see a lot of people buying it just because of the sheer novelty of the oscillating turret.
06:29And it does have that very good quick-firing gun or quick-reloading gun.
06:34And, of course, you do have a pretty effective Heatshell and a Heatshell, which might be useful on occasion.
06:40But, again, I don't think that's going to be used all that much.
06:43I won't be buying it myself, but I understand that a lot of people probably are going to buy this.
06:47And, yeah, it's just a shame that it's not going to be in the regular tech tree.
06:51Anyway, that was just a quick video looking at the T-58.
06:54Hopefully you enjoyed it.
06:55I've been Terenno, and I'll see you next time.
