00:00You've bucked the trend, how did you do it?
00:03Well it's true, all of the MRP polls and the exit poll all said that we would lose
00:07Croydon South. We have bucked the trend, the result here was a lot better than many other
00:11places around the country. We've done that by delivering for local people,
00:16getting things done practically, which the local residents wanted us to do.
00:21And there's a lesson there I think more widely, that if you make a commitment
00:24and then deliver it, that is something the public respond positively to.
00:28What's your number one priority for the coming parliament here in Croydon South?
00:31Well locally I'll be working with the Executive Mayor of Croydon, Jason Perry,
00:34to bring a new pool to Purley. I'll be working with the Department of Health
00:37to bring a new medical centre to Coulsdon. We're going to bring a new banking centre
00:41to Coulsdon as well because the last bank closed down, as well as getting more police
00:45deployed in Croydon town centre to make it safer. Nationally I'll be concentrating on holding
00:51the incoming government to account and making the case for, for example, lower taxes.
00:57And, you know, a regulatory environment that lets businesses prosper and thrive,
01:02to let people keep more of their own money. Those are the kind of things which I'll be
01:05working for in parliament. It looks like this is going to be the worst
01:09result for the Conservative Party in its history in terms of number of seats.
01:12What's the single biggest reason for that? Well I mean 14 years in power is quite a long time.
01:17I think there were frustrations on issues like tax, issues like immigration. All of those I think
01:24weighed on voters minds and we need to take that on board and respond to it.
