00:00This viral video showing U.S. military troops being deployed to the Middle East, it's completely fake.
00:06It's not troops preparing for a ground invasion into Iran.
00:10This is AI footage and we actually tracked down the creator of this video.
00:15Yes, the U.S. has moved military troops to this region,
00:19but officials say that there's been no decision yet on whether or not to move ground troops into Iran.
00:26Now, I checked this video with a deepfake detector and it immediately was flagged as synthetic media,
00:33aka AI-generated footage.
00:35Then I tracked down the original creator using reverse image search.
00:41The creator had used hashtags like realistic and also called it a simulation,
00:45but that context got stripped away and now it's spreading as proof of an invasion.
00:51The Independent also spoke to a deepfake expert at Resemble AI.
00:55First things first, the audio.
00:57Form up in lines here, let's go.
00:59It contains synthesis artefacts, things like unnatural speech and patterns and compressions
01:05you don't get from real on-the-ground recordings.
01:09Then on to the visuals.
01:11If you look really closely, the soldiers' faces and gear don't have consistent structure.
01:16The matching formations in the background also repeat in a pattern.
01:21A known failure of AI models.
01:23And this is how misinformation works.
01:26As AI gets better, you're going to be seeing a lot more of this,
01:30especially out-of-war zones like what we're experiencing in the Middle East.
01:35So, let's get the video together.
01:35So, if you're watching this video.
01:35So, let's get started.
01:35So, let's continue to keep going.
