00:14Anwar said the Bumiputra quota for matriculation college admission had caused controversy at

00:19times, with some arguing against minority rights and others questioning the rights of

00:23Bumiputras enshrined in the federal constitution.

00:27He said the reality of meritocracy must be embraced, adding that while meritocracy is

00:32important, there is still a need for justice and fairness to avoid disadvantaging marginalized

00:36and poor communities.

00:38Yesterday, Anwar announced that all students who score 10 As and above in SPM, regardless

00:44of race or background, will be assured a spot in matriculation colleges starting with the

00:482025 intake.

00:50However, he said the existing Bumiputra quota for the matriculation program would not be

00:54affected.

00:55The prime minister said the decision was made by the cabinet last Friday to address the

01:00issue of fairness in education.

01:02Racial quotas for admission to public universities were abolished in 2002.

01:07However, matriculation colleges maintain a 90 percent quota for Bumiputras, while certain

01:11foundation courses are exclusively for Bumiputras.
