00:00What are your thoughts on how we educate, shape and train the next generation of Malaysians
00:07to compete in the global economy?
00:09Yes, not too difficult here.
00:15We need to make the necessary adjustments fast.
00:20For example, say 30 years ago when I was four, 40 probably, when I was Minister of Education,
00:29there was not much need to emphasise on engineering and Tibet and AI as we have to do so now.
00:41So the pace of change has got to be fast and cannot use the normal academic rigour and
00:54process as we did in the past.
00:57Similarly with the English, with the issue of language, I'm very firm on the need for
01:05all Malaysians to be able to be conversant in Bahasa Melayu, it's a national language.
01:10But at the same time you realise that you need to then enhance the level of proficiency
01:18of the English language.
01:21Because we used to have English as a medium of instruction, then it becomes Bahasa, then
01:26it went on, unfortunately, at the expense of the English language.
01:31Now we have to bring it back.
